Spotlight on… Ohio State University Extension

OSU Extension is the original and most extensive outreach arm of the university.

With offices run by faculty and staff in all 88 counties, Extension fulfills Ohio State’s land-grant mission to address challenges of Ohioans via non-credit programs and research-based materials.

We focus primarily on agriculture and natural resources, including environmental stewardship and gardening; family and consumer sciences, including nutrition, finances and human development; community and economic development, including business retention and expansion; and youth development and citizenship through Extension’s 4-H program.

Local efforts are supported by faculty with Extension appointments based in 13 departments in Columbus and at the OARDC in Wooster. Through OSU CARES, Extension expands its outreach by collaborating with more than 50 departments representing all colleges across campus.

Spotlight on… Melton Center for Jewish Studies

The Melton Center for Jewish Studies offers 200 interdisciplinary courses that comprise Jewish studies at Ohio State.

In coordination with nine affiliated academic departments and represented by 30 professors, the Melton Center oversees Jewish studies majors, minors, and graduate students and offers a variety of scholarships.

The center hosts academic conferences, attracts visiting scholars, and provides financial support for study in Israel. In addition, it orchestrates diverse educational programs and cultural events for the university and the larger Columbus community. Such offerings include concerts, films, panel discussions, and lectures on topics as varied as Jewish participation in the Civil Rights movement to twentieth century Israeli composers.

Spotlight on… College of Public Health

Health is not a solo act. It reflects how we live, eat, drink, work and play.

Public health makes the world a healthier and safer place. Ohio State’s College of Public Health is the first and only accredited school of public health in the state. Specializations include biostatistics, epidemiology, health behavior and health promotion, environmental health sciences, health services management and policy, veterinary public health, and clinical investigation.

The college houses the Center for Health Outcomes Policy and Evaluation Studies and Public Health Preparedness for Infectious Diseases, an interdisciplinary research collaboration of six Ohio State colleges. The Office of Workforce Development serves hundreds of public health professionals annually through trainings and workshops.

Spotlight on… Writers Talk

Wednesday evenings at 8:01 p.m., WCBE radio (90.5 FM) listeners get a glimpse of the writing life by way ofWriters Talk, produced by Doug Dangler at the Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing.

Broadcast since September 2008, these interviews are derived from the 50-plus podcasts published on the CSTW web site  since 2006. Dangler works with undergraduate students to produce the five-minute segments from hours of interview material with poets, songwriters and fiction and nonfiction writers.

“Working with WCBE is a great opportunity for our students, as well as authors visiting central Ohio,” Dangler says. “It’s outreach for the university, too, and most importantly, lets us learn and spread knowledge about writing, part of our Center’s mission.” Contact: Doug Dangler at 292-1308 or dangler.6@osu.edu

Spotlight on… AAAS Community Center

The Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center, 905 Mt. Vernon Ave. is the outreach component of the university’s Department of African American and African Studies.

Located in the historic Mount Vernon area in near east Columbus, the Community Extension Center provides community outreach and education programs designed to enhance the educational opportunities of students and improve the quality of life for children, teens, adults and senior citizens who live and work in the neighborhoods near and around the center and Columbus’ urban communities.

Activities such as faculty and student research projects, non-credit courses designed to offer personal and community enrichment, and college classes aimed at non-traditional students provide a valuable context for the university’s commitment to outreach and engagement and research. Spotlight on… Creative Services

Creative Services within University Communications offers professional print/web design and editorial services to the university community. From recruiters and annual reports to e-newsletters and web sites, the office assists university departments and colleges in developing communications that meet Ohio State’s core initiatives and visual identity guidelines. Creative Services works closely with other university offices, including Photo Services, New Media and UniPrint, to provide seamless and coordinated communications.

As an earnings unit, Creative Services gives back nearly 7 percent of its earnings to Ohio State. The Creative Services portfolio includes Visual Poetry, which received a 2008 Award of Excellence from the University & College Designers Association, and The Arts Initiative Web Site.
