Swire departs for job in Obama administration
Peter Swire, the C. William O’Neill Professor in Law and Judicial Administration at the Moritz College of Law, will take a leave to serve in the White House under President Barack Obama. He has been appointed as special assistant to the president for economic policy. This position is in the National Economic Council (NEC), led by Lawrence Summers. Among other matters, Swire will be working on housing and housing finance issues.
The NEC was established in 1993 to advise the president on US and global economic policy. It resides within the Office of Policy Development and is part of the Executive Office of the President. In working on housing finance issues, Swire is returning to topics that engaged him early in his career, during and after the savings-and-loan crisis. In that period, he worked extensively on banking and housing issues and served as president of the Section on Financial Institutions and Consumer Financial Services of the Association of American Law Schools. Swire has taught a range of business law courses, including banking regulation, business associations and antitrust law, along with his work on privacy and Internet-related issues.
Swire, a member of the Moritz faculty since 1996, was on leave from the college to serve as the Clinton administration’s chief counselor for privacy, in the US Office of Management and Budget, between 1999 and early 2001. Since returning to the college, he has directed the Moritz Washington, DC, Summer Program.

Faculty Compensation and Benefits Committee report available on senate Web site
The 2008-09 report of the Faculty Compensation and Benefits Committee has been posted online at senate.osu.edu/committees/FCBC/FCBC.html. In the report, OSU’s 2007-08 salary increases, as well as its record over the last 10 years, are compared with those in the CIC, AAU and a select group of “peer” institutions. The comparisons are then adjusted for differences in living costs and salary increases for 2007-08 and are broken down by department for total and continuing faculty.
Other features include a clarification of phased retirement options and the fee structures of the various 403B plans, and the FCBC’s response to Provost Joe Alutto’s memo: Principles for Faculty Reward Systems in a High Performance Academic Culture.
