Curtis Moody, president and CEO of the Moody-Nolan architectural firm, will be the speaker for Ohio State’s winter commencement March 21 in the Schottenstein Center. About 2,000 students will receive degrees during the ceremony, which begins at 2 p.m.Moody, who earned his BS in architecture in 1973 from what is now Ohio State’s Knowlton School of Architecture, has served as principal architect for many notable campus buildings, including the new Ohio Union, the Schottenstein Center, the Recreation and Physical Activities Center and Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Moody began his architectural practice in 1982 in Columbus. He has been involved in the design of projects that exceed several billion dollars in construction over the last 37 years and has built the firm into the largest minority-owned architectural firm in the nation.
Moody played for Ohio State’s varsity basketball team from 1971-73. He has taken his love for athletics and become a leader in the design of sports and recreation facilities for many cities, colleges and universities.
His projects in Columbus include the Ohio Statehouse renovation, the Port Columbus Airport expansion, Gowdy Field North, the Center for Science and Industry (COSI), the East High School renovation and the Smith Brothers Hardware renovation.
He also has worked on such projects as the Cincinnati Public Schools School for Creative and Performing Arts, Ohio University’s Baker University Student Center, Ithaca (N.Y.) College’s new athletics and events center, Purdue University’s Recreational Sports Center expansion and renovation and Morehouse College’s Forbest Arena in Atlanta.
Moody is a strong supporter of his alma mater, helping to sponsor and mentor architecture students. In 1989 Moody used his design fees for Ohio State’s Hale Black Cultural Center to establish an endowed scholarship for an outstanding minority student enrolled in architecture. He is currently a member of The Ohio State University Alumni Association Board of Directors. He has served on the Knowlton School’s Alumni Board of Governors and the Athletic Council.
He won a Distinguished Service Award from OSU in 2002 and a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1994.
His honors include the 2008 Presidents Exemplary Service Award from the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) and the 2007 Gold Medal Award from the Ohio Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
Moody’s designs have won more than 147 design citations, including 23 from the AIA and 30 from NOMA, more awards than any other minority architectural firm in the United States.
