Recognition
Kramer Akli, Physics, is one of the recipients of the 2012 AFOSR Young Investigator Award. This program is open to American scientists and engineers who received a PhD in the last five years and have demonstrated exceptional ability and promise for conducting basic research. The award provides support for research over a five-year period. Akli will use his AFOSR support for his research on the generation of intense x-rays from peta-watt class laser systems.
Hassan Aly, Economics, was recently elected as one of seven new members to the Board of Trustees for The Economic Research Forum, a regional network dedicated to promoting exemplary economic research to contribute to sustainable development in Iran and Turkey.
Sarah Anderson, Epidemiology, was quoted in the Ohio State Alumni Magazine, January/February 2012 issue, for her research on mother/child relationships and obesity.
Michael Bisesi, Environmental Health Sciences, received an award from the Union County Health Department for “Child Injury Action Group.”
Stan Gehrt, Environment and Natural Resources and Wildlife Extension Specialist, had research highlighted on the PBS Nature program, Raccoon Nation, Feb. 8.
Brett Kordenbrock, Landscape Architecture, is one of five winners of the ACSA Archive100 Being Resourceful competition, which seeks ideas and projects that use design not only to sustain environmental systems but to encourage health and productivity between all natural systems, including people. Kordenbrock’s proposal focused on the Pickaway Power Plant.
Jin-Fa Lee, Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been named as a 2012 Distinguished Scholar Award recipient. The award honors six faculty members who demonstrate exceptional achievements in their fields. Recipients of the award receive a $20,000 research grant and a $3,000 honorarium to pursue their scholarly activity. Lee’s research includes electromagnetic field theories, antennas, numerical methods and their applications to computational electromagnetics, analyses of numerical methods, fast finite element methods, fast integral equation methods, hybrid methods, domain decomposition methods and multi-physics simulations and modeling.
Karen Lewis, Architecture, and students from her winter architecture studio have been recognized in the Van Alen Institute’s “Life at the Speed of Rail” competition. The competition — a multimedia ideas competition that addresses the cultural, environmental and economic impact of a new US rail network — awarded 10 winning entries and honorable mentions that will be discussed and exhibited at several museums throughout the country this summer. Lewis’ two winning submissions —“Switch Space,” and “Health Corridor”— focused on the “3C” high-speed rail network, a controversial proposal to connect Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland with passenger rail.
Robert Livesey, Architecture, has been awarded the AIA Ohio 2010 Gold Medal Award, the highest honor that AIA Ohio can bestow on an individual. It is conferred by the AIA Ohio Board of Directors in recognition of exemplary efforts and significant accomplishments.
Wendy Panero and Cayman Unterborn, Earth Sciences, were featured in the Huffington Post for their “Diamond Planets” research. Unterborn presented their findings at the American Geophysical Union, San Francisco, Calif., December 2011.
Sharon Schweikhart, Health Services Management and Policy, was selected to become chair-elect of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration and will begin her term in June 2012.
Ronald Solomon, Mathematics, received the 2012 Leroy P. Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition for “The Classification of Finite Simple Groups: Groups of Characteristics 2-type,” Mathematical Monographs and Surveys, Vol. 172, (Providence, R.I.: American Mathematical Society, 2011), with Michael Aschbacher, Richard Lyons and Steve Smith.
Lisa Tilder and Stephen Turk, Architecture, received the 2010-11 ACSA/AIA Housing Design Education Award and the 2010-11 ACSA Collaborative Practice Honorable Mention for their work on the Pod Home, a sustainable house and a flexible living “pod” that could be transported to various sites for a range of needs.
Cynthia Tyson, Teaching and Learning, and James Moore III, Physical Activity and Educational Services, have been named to the 2011 Who’s Who in Black Columbus.
Joe Wheaton, Physical Activity and Educational Services, and Terrell Strayhorn, Educational Policy and Leadership, have been accepted into the President and Provost’s Leadership Institute for senior faculty.
Deanna Wilkinson, Human Development and Family Science, was named Woman of the Year by the I’m Every Woman Expo National Expansion, a movement in Detroit, Chicago, Columbus and Los Angeles, August 2011.
