Forums to explore future of technology

PlanIT's Visioning Team is sponsoring Technology Days, a set of strategic planning forums designed to provide the Ohio State academic community with expert vision on the future of technology in higher education. PlanIT is the name the Office of the CIO has given to the extensive process of developing an Information Technology Strategic Plan for Ohio State.

The first in a series of forums, "Advancing Distributed and Distance Education," will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 7 in 140 Pfahl Hall.

Headlining the information session is Diana Oblinger, adjunct professor at North Carolina State University and senior fellow at the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research. Her presentation, "e-Learning: Evolution or Extinction?" is from 8:30-9:45 a.m.

Crenshaw is diversity series lecturer April 29

The President's Council on Women's Issues is sponsoring the upcoming President and Provost's Diversity Lecture from 9-11 a.m. April 29 in the Ohio Union Conference Theatre. Kimberle Crenshaw, professor of law at both UCLA and Columbia Law School, will deliver "Discrimination in a Global Context." She is the leading speaker on critical race theory. Geography seminar scheduled for May 9

A Geography Colloquium Series presentation will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. May 9 in 1080 Derby Hall. Judith Carney, professor of geography, University of California, Los Angeles, will present "Rice and the African Diaspora in the Atlantic World."

COSI president to speak at alumni event

Kathryn D. Sullivan, COSI president/CEO and former NASA astronaut, will present the keynote address at the Human Ecology Alumni Society's annual awards luncheon, to be held at 11:15 a.m. April 27 in the Longaberger Alumni House. The event will include an awards presentation to five Human Ecology alumni.

Germanic Languages hosts Hens reading

The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures is hosting a reading at 7 p.m. May 2 at the Max Kade German House, 141 W. 11th Ave. Gregor Hens, associate professor of Germanic language, will read from his recently published novel Himmelssturz. A reception will follow.

The James offers caregiver classes

A free course that teaches caregiving and problem-solving skills to those caring for cancer patients will be taught April 30 by oncology care professionals of the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. Classes will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Medical Center's Battelle location, 1375 Perry St.

Stephan presents Humanities lecture

Halina Stephan, professor of Slavic and East European languages and literatures, will present "Imagining Afghanistan: Bolshevik Orientalism in Russian Literature" in the College of Humanities' eighth Inaugural Lecture of the year at 4:30 p.m. May 7 at the Faculty Club. This lecture addresses the literary image of Afghanistan presented to the Russian public following the signing of the Soviet-Afghan friendship treaty in 1921.

Central Benefits upgrades claims system

Ohio State's third party administrator, Central Benefits, has purchased FACETS, a new claims payment application, that will go into effect on May 1. This program replaces the current processing system used by the University. The conversion is being implemented through Central Benefits, with the support of the Office of Human Resources and Managed Health Care Systems to improve claims processing, timeliness, accuracy and efficiency for OSU Health Plans.

The new system will allow for quicker turnaround in claims payment. It also offers customer service representatives the ability to view historical claims data more easily and the history is more comprehensive for customers inquiring on claims status.

Operation Feed 2002 campaign under way

Operation Feed 2002 at Ohio State, when faculty, staff and students are asked to help provide meals for central Ohioans in need, is in progress. Donations of food and money will be accepted through May 3.

The Office of Human Resources coordinates the effort at Ohio State.

'Hurricane' Carter subject of lecture, film

Lesra Martin will present "The Power of Literacy: The Story of Lesra and the Hurricane" at the Karlsberger Lecture at 6 p.m. May 2 in Hitchcock Hall Auditorium. The College of Education and the Columbus Education Association co-sponsor the Penny Chapdelaine Karlsberger Lecture in memory of the Ohio State alumna.

Rubin "Hurricane" Carter was a top-ranked boxer wrongly convicted of three racial murders in 1966. A free video presentation of the 1999 film, The Hurricane, will be held at 7 p.m. April 25 in 260 Ramseyer Hall.

Optometry Open House set for April 28

The College of Optometry will host its annual Optometry Open House from 1-4 p.m. April 28. The program is free and open to the public and will be held in Fry Hall.

Highlights include tours of the facility, student organization exhibits, and an Admissions and Student Financial Aid Information Session.

Critical Difference for Women offers grants

Applications are being accepted for the Critical Difference for Women 2002 Professional Development Grants for Women and Women of Color Advancement Grants.

The Professional Development Grants for Women program facilitates the professional development and career mobility of women. The Women of Color Advancement Grants assist faculty, staff and graduate student women of color in their participation in professional development activities and networks.

The awards for each grant can be up to $500. The application deadline is May 10.

CSP presents race and ethnicity forum

Natasha Philpot, Mark Skillings and Dwight L. Varnum of the Office of Faculty and TA Development will present "Does Race Matter? Exploring the Racial Dynamics at Ohio State" from 2-4 p.m. May 1 in room 150 of the Younkin Success Center. The forum, presented by the Commitment to Success Program, will explore how issues of race and ethnicity influence how students perceive the academic and social climate at Ohio State.

OSU East Community Day is April 27

The Ohio State Hospitals East will host its annual Community Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 27. Activities include free health and safety information, including free health screenings, and a neighborhood cleanup.

Screenings include cholesterol, blood sugar, height/weight and health counseling. Call 293-5123 to schedule a screening.

Workshops highlight Universal Design

Ohio State faculty members will conduct eight free educational workshops April 27-May 9 on the benefits of Universal Design and how people can incorporate features in existing homes and apartments.

Universal Design is a movement that advocates all environments not only be accessible to people regardless of age, size or physical ability, but that these features be attractive and appear seamless into the design of the home. The free, one-hour workshops are sponsored by Ohio State Extension; the departments of Consumer and Textile Sciences and Allied Medical Professions; the Ohio Department of Aging; and Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse. Workshops are scheduled for: April 27, 10 a.m., Lowe's, 3616 E. Broad St.; April 27, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Lowe's, 3600 Park Mill Run Road, Hilliard; April 30, 3 p.m., Licking County Aging Program Inc., 745 E. Fashion lecture series hosts two guests

Teri Agins, a senior special writer with the Wall Street Journal and author of The End of Fashion, will present "The End of Fashion" as part of the lecture series presented by Ohio State's Historic Costume and Textiles Collection. The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. April 25 at Pierre's in the Smith Brothers Hardware Building Annex, 500 N. Fourth St.

  • The lecture series continues when Kathleen L. Rowold, curator of the Elizabeth Sage Historic Costume Collection and professor at Indiana University, presents "Bill Blass: An American Designer" at 6 p.m. May 9 at Saks Fifth Avenue in the Polaris Fashion Mall.

Auction 34! airs on WOSU-TV

This year's Auction 34! fund-raiser for the WOSU stations will air through April 27 and May 1-4 on WOSU-TV34. More than 500 central Ohio merchants have donated over 3,000 items that will be offered to the highest bidders during this live television event. Among the featured items up for bid are golf foursomes to the OSU Scarlet course and a 1986 Mercedes Benz 560 SEC donated by David Lee Roth.

OARDC celebrates arbor, plant days

Secrest Arboretum, part of the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center's Wooster campus, will host an Arbor Day celebration at 3 p.m. April 26 at the Arboretum Field Headquarters building. Admission is free and open to the public.

Also ahead for Secrest Arboretum is Plant Discovery Day -- a plant sale, rare plant auction and plant-related educational activities from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 4 at OARDC's Fisher Auditorium. The event is a fund-raising benefit for the arboretum.

Citino, Estes are reading guests

A poetry reading and book signing with David Citino and Angie Estes will be held at 7 p.m. April 30 in the Wexner Film/Video Theater. Admission is free.

Citino has been awarded the Alumni Distinguished Teaching Award and the Exemplary Faculty Award from Ohio State, and is the winner of NEA and OAC fellowships. Estes is the winner of the 2001 FIELD Poetry Prize, the 2001 Alice Fay Di Castagnola Prize from the Poetry Society of America, and an OAC fellowship.

ACCAD hosts 'Henry's Garden' screening

The Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) will host an advanced screening of the animated film "Henry's Garden" at the Wexner Film/Video Theater from 2-4 p.m. May 9. The film is the work of OSU alumni Moon Seun and Kevin Geiger. A question-and-answer session will follow the film. All are welcome to attend.

Their combined screen credits include such films as "Species," "The Island of Doctor Moreau," "Terminator 2 3D," "Fantasia 2000," "Dinosaur," "Prince of Egypt," "The Road to El Dorado" and "Reign of Fire."

Bioethics Network features ethics topics

Donal P. O'Mathuna will present "What Good Could Come of This?" at the Bioethics Network of Ohio banquet, to be held from 6-8 p.m. May 9 at the Fawcett Center. Other Bioethics Conference events planned are:

  • May 9, 1-4 p.m., "Principles for Ethics Committees," "Innovations in Ethics Education" and "Ethics Consultation."
  • May 10, 7:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m., an all-day workshop with a variety of ethics topics, including the stem cell debate, end-of-life issues and genetic technology.

Tobacco cessation program begins May 8

The Ohio State Medical Center's Kick It! Tobacco Cessation program spring session begins May 8 at the Battelle location, 1375 Perry St. The program is facilitated by a hospital-based, wellness and prevention specialist in a group session for five weeks, from 6:30-8 p.m., followed by two weeks of telephone follow-up.

Open house showcases OARDC's colorful past

Two historical attractions not typically open to the public will open their doors from 3-7 p.m. April 25 to showcase the colorful history of the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center's Wooster campus.

OARDC's Barnhart Rice Homestead -- one of the best surviving examples of German architecture within Wayne County -- and the OARDC Museum will be open to the public free of charge. Visitors will have the opportunity to inspect many exhibits featuring actual equipment used by the center's scientists and workers, and learn about the many accomplishments of the center.

Creative Writing hosts Chana Block

The OSU Creative Writing Program Reading Series is presenting a free, public reading with Chana Bloch at 8 p.m. May 8 in the Wexner Center Performance Space.

Bloch is a professor of English and director of the Creative Writing Program at Mills College, and is the author of three books of poems, The Secrets of the Tribe, The Past Keeps Changing and Mrs. Dumpty, and of a critical study of George Herbert, Spelling the Word.

Med Center helps sponsor AIDSWalk

More than 3,000 walkers participating in the Dr. Robert J. Fass Memorial AIDSWalk Central Ohio 2002 will be stepping off from Bicentennial Park in downtown Columbus at 2 p.m. May 5. Registration is from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. A music festival begins at 11:30 a.m. The Ohio State Medical Center is a sponsor of the event.

The 4.5-mile walk will help raise AIDS awareness and funds to benefit nine local agencies that provide direct services and educational activities to the central Ohio community.

Nobel Prize winner is Smith Lecturer

Eric Cornell, winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics, will deliver the annual Smith Lecture at 8 p.m. May 7 in 131 Hitchcock Hall. Cornell will discuss the field for which he won the Nobel prize: "Stone Cold Science: Bose-Einstein Condensation and the Weird World of Physics a Millionth of a Degree from Absolute Zero." Cornell is a senior scientist with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, a Fellow of JILA and professor adjoint in the Physics Department of the University of Colorado, Boulder.

The Smith Lecture is sponsored jointly by the Department of Physics and the Graduate School.

Parker Dairy Store celebrates anniversary

The Parker Dairy Store, located in the Parker Food Science and Technology Building, is celebrating its one-year anniversary with food and door prizes offered May 10. A portion of profits will benefit the Campus Campaign. Menu items include a variety of breakfast and lunch items and ice cream. Store hours are 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Scarlet & Gray Ag Day is April 26

More than 350 students from Columbus area schools will be on the Ohio State campus April 26 to take part in Scarlet and Gray Ag Day. Fifth-graders will take part in educational, hands-on sessions about agriculture and natural resources from 9:30 a.m.-1:40 p.m.

In its fourth year, Ag Day is designed to increase awareness of agriculture in today's society and its importance in people's lives. The event is coordinated by student members of the OSU Agricultural Education Society and is held at several College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences facilities.

Hale Center event features book signing

In celebration of the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center's 12th anniversary, the Office of Minority Affairs is hosting a presentation, reception and book signing at 5:30 p.m. April 26 at the Hale Center featuring Alita Anderson, author of On the Other Side: African Americans Tell of Healing.
