1-2-2007 Staff spotlight 1/4/07Karen Blessing, an Ohio State employee for the past 15 years, works for special projects in the Department of Math Why did you choose to work at Ohio State? Job security for raising my two children as a single mother. What do you like about your job? I enjoy the interaction with faculty, staff and students on a daily basis. No two days are ever the same. What would you improve at Ohio State? I would seek to improve the parking situation for faculty and staff. What advice would you give a new employee? Work like nobody’s watching. If you weren’t working at Ohio State, what would you rather be doing? Go back to AT&T for five years to earn my pension. What honor or recognition are you most proud of? Staff recognition award for doing catering events on the job. Who is your hero? Zel Rexroad, professor emeritus Arts and Sciences Department, is my hero because from the inception of my being hired at the university she has been my mentor. She’s very supportive, helpful and understanding, as well as being my friend to this day. What is your favorite activity outside of work? Visiting nursing homes and the Methodist children’s home with my German shepherd who is a member of Central Ohio Good Shepherds Chapter #157 of Therapy Dogs International. We do this to relieve stress and provide comfort for those in need. Many retirees in the nursing home had to leave their pets behind and look forward to her weekly visit. What are you going to do when you retire? Join a travel group to make and meet new friends and become more involved in the lives of my children and future grandchildren. I hope to be able to have a therapy dog and try to keep a positive outlook on life. If you were the university president for a day, what would you do? I would issue a proclamation that everyone at OSU would have the day after the national championship off and also the day the team returns so we can celebrate with them and Coach (Jim) Tressel.
