Conferences

Nation’s fiscal future a town hall forum

Jan. 10

The John Glenn School of Public Affairs in partnership with the Concord Coalition and other federal budget analysts will host a town hall forum on the Fiscal Wake-Up Tour at 5:30 p.m. at The Blackwell ballrooms. The tour focuses on the nation’s long-term fiscal challenges, such as entitlement programs (Social Security). Rob Portman, director of the Office of Management and Budget, will be the featured speaker.

Studying climate change: A technological journey

Jan. 26

Faculty with students interested in global climate change are encouraged to inform them about the Byrd Polar Research Center’s special event that looks at the limitations and advances of technology that enable scientists in this field. The event, sponsored by the Battelle Endowment for Technology and Human Affairs, begins at 9 a.m. with a general history of technology in polar studies session followed by presentations from the following research groups — Remote Sensing, Sea Level Rise, Ice Core Paleoclimatology and Polar Meteorology. The afternoon session will explore OSU and other programs of interest.

The first 50 undergrads who register for the full-day event will receive a catered lunch and an afternoon of small-group sessions and tours of the BPRC labs and research facilities, wrapping up by 3 p.m.

Engineering wants to spark female interest

Through Feb. 2

The College of Engineering is looking for third- through sixth-grade female students for its “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” from 9:30
a.m.- 2:30 p.m. Feb. 24 at Hitchcock Hall. The half-day event, offered by Ohio State’s Women in Engineering program and sponsored by Fifth Third Bank and Microsoft, is open to students who want to learn about the world of engineering. One parent and/or guardian is welcome to accompany each participant.

Participants will have fun learning about engineering by doing hands-on activities and will hear from engineering students and industry professionals about opportunities available with an education in engineering. The program is offered free of charge to all girls. Registration is required. Applications will be accepted until Feb. 2 or until full. Presidential Search Committee holds forums

The Presidential Search Committee, which is seeking a replacement for Karen Holbrook, who retires in June, will hold two public forums in January.
The university community can offer its suggestions and input on the presidential profile from 3-5 p.m. Jan. 4 in the Wexner Center’s Film/Video Theatre lower level or from 3-5 p.m. Jan. 10 in the Chen Family Room at Scott Laboratory. Signups for either session begin at 2:45 p.m.

OSU sponsors Growers Congress

The Ohio Fruit and Vegetable Growers Congress is returning to the Greater Columbus Convention Center with three days of workshops, educational sessions, roundtable discussions and a trade show packed with the latest information on fruits, vegetables, ag and horticulture services and direct marketing.
The annual conference will be held Jan. 15-17 and is sponsored by Ohio State, the Ohio Vegetable and Potato Growers Association and the Ohio Fruit Growers Society. For more information and to register, visit ohiofruit.org.

Moderate Republicans’ future debated

Faculty members from three departments will engage in a lively roundtable discussion on “The Future of Moderate Republicanism,” placing today’s political situation and midterm election results in perspective. Held at 7 p.m. in the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater, the discussion will revolve in part around the release of the book “Modern Republican: Arthur Larson and the Eisenhower Years” by Associate Professor of History David Stebenne. (Larson was chief presidential speechwriter for Eisenhower.)

The panelists will look at the last time the moderates were in charge of the national GOP, why they lost control and their prospects now for regaining influence in the party. Panelists include Stebenne; political scientist Paul Beck, dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences; and moderator Nancy Rogers, dean of the Moritz College of Law.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will include a Q&A session with the audience, followed by a reception and book signing. R.S.V.P. is requested to alcalde.1@osu.edu.

The Ohio Supercomputer Center will host internationally-recognized expert in high-performance computing Jack Dongarra from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the Fawcett Center Auditorium. OSU police empower employees to fight rape

Rape Aggression Defense Systems is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on the basics of hands-on defense training.

R.A.D. classes are sponsored by the Ohio State University Police Department and are free. All R.A.D. instructors are certified law enforcement officers. Classes may be scheduled independently to fit a group’s needs or taken during regularly scheduled days during winter quarter: 6-9 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays at 202 Lincoln Tower, 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays at Morrill Tower’s Browsing Room or 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays at Pomerene Hall’s third-floor gym.
