Staff spotlight 2/1/07

Regina Vann Hickok, an employee with the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science, has worked at Ohio State for 11 years.

Why did you choose to work at Ohio State? I worked with the Ohio State Legislature for seven years and was seeking opportunities to improve my administrative skills within the state system.

What do you like about your job? That I can make a difference — that I have the privilege to help students who will dramatically shape our future world. OSU students, whether future scientists, farmers, university faculty members or parents, will make great contributions to our society. I also like challenges, and the university environment is ever changing. It keeps you alert.

What would you improve at Ohio State? Parking. And foster a greater understanding between all employees, from faculty to staff, from one location to another and from one discipline to another.

What advice would you give a new employee? Take advantage of all the great benefits on campus — attend cultural events and enroll in classes. Even if you are not working on a degree, there are so many great opportunities, such as learning about organic gardening or the History of Feeding Ourselves and the World.

If you weren’t working at Ohio State, what would you rather be doing? I have always thought it would be great to be a tour guide. Actually, it isn’t too far removed in principle from my OSU position. I enjoy helping people find their path to achieve their goals. Both are educational, whether it is a degree or helping someone reach the dream of experiencing the sunrise at Haleakala or the toll of Big Ben.

What honor or recognition are you most proud of? I was just selected to receive the 2006 CFAES Shirley Brooks-Jones Citizenship Award. The intent of this peer-selected award is to annually recognize one staff member in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences who excels in providing outstanding and ongoing excellence in services to faculty, staff, students and/or others through communication, fairness, problem solving and contributions to the common good. The award is named after a retired employee, Shirley Brooks-Jones, who served the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences as a staff member for 35 years.

Who is your hero? My husband. I admire his love and respect for all God’s creatures, his integrity and his wisdom.

What is your favorite activity outside of work? Traveling and exploring new horizons.

To nominate a staff member for the next issue, e-mail us at oncampus@osu.edu and let us know in 50 words or less why we should feature them.
