Ludwig receives Presidential Leadership award

Barbara Ludwig, professor and chair of OSU Extension in Columbus, has been named as the first recipient of the Kathryn T. Schoen Presidential Leadership Award, President Karen Holbrook announced April 12. One of two awards created in a restructuring of the Schoen awards program last year, the Presidential Leadership award supports a prestigious and high-level leadership development opportunity for a tenured faculty woman ready to move into an academic leadership position.

Ludwig will participate in the Bryn Mawr Summer Institute this year and will return to campus with opportunities to put newly learned skills to use. The Bryn Mawr Summer Institute offers women faculty and administrators intensive training in educational administration, enriching the leadership of its participants with skills and information pertinent to the management and governance of colleges and universities.

Ludwig was nominated by Bobby Moser, executive dean of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences and vice president for university outreach. As a result of this opportunity, Ludwig’s goals are: to refine FAES’ educational opportunities and fundraising efforts; to lead operational change, including an increase in mentorship and championing of new funding sources; to play an expanded role in elevating Ohio State’s outreach and engagement efforts; and to reposition FAES in response to Gov. Bob Taft’s funding cuts.

He is a past recipient of the Department of Plant Pathology Teaching Award and the college’s Undergraduate Advising Award.

Nameth’s area of expertise is diseases of ornamental plants, particularly virus-induced diseases of floral crops. He has published widely in both scientific journals and trade publications for the green industry, and has worked with ornamental growers throughout Ohio and other states, assisting them with their disease control and management needs. He is a member of the Ohio Florist Association, Perennial Plant Association, the Governor’s Residence Horticulture Advisory Board and the Horticulture Advisory Board for the Franklin Park Conservatory.

Education college programs are tops in nation

Six specialty academic areas in the College of Education again are among the top five nationwide, according to U.S. News & World Report. Overall, the college is among the top 10 programs at public universities, and the only Ohio education college to be in the overall or specialty rankings.

Vocational and technical education continues at the top of the specialty rankings. The program in the School of Physical Activity and Educational Services has been number one for nine years in a row.

Counseling and personnel services remained in second place. Administration and supervision is third, while curriculum and instruction is fourth. Elementary and secondary education both are tied for fifth-place finishes. Overall, the College of Education remained 17th of education doctoral programs at 189 private and public colleges and universities. The college has been among the top 20 in the U.S. News survey for 14 years.

Jennings hired to advise trustees

The Board of Trustees has hired former university President Edward Jennings to serve as a consultant to the board on governance issues. The passing of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act by Congress places significant emphasis on board oversight and the ways boards carry out their obligations and fiduciary duties, according to Board Chair Zuheir Sofia. Therefore, the board will retain an independent outside adviser to assist it in reviewing the areas of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act that are relevant in exercising its fiduciary duties, and who will assist on other board governance matters, he added.

There are 11 areas on which Jennings has been asked to advise the board, including the 1997 McKinsey Group recommendations on trustee governance, evaluation of the board’s performance, long-range strategic planning and the one-year term for the board chair.
