Grants

Greg Baker, Mathematics and Aerospace Engineering, Joel Johnson, Electrical and Computer Engineering and C.K. Shum, Earth Sciences, received a $550,000 National Science Foundation grant for “Numerical Studies of Sea Surface Wave Height Statistics with Application to Sea Level Sensing Using Satellite Altimetry.”

Konrad Dabrowski, Environment and Natural Resources, has received a Lake Erie Protection Fund Small grant of $10,000 from the Ohio Lake Erie Commission for his project on the influence of vitamin concentrations in eggs on survival of walleye embryos in Lake Erie.

Amanda Rodewald, Environment and Natural Resources, has been awarded a $421,300 grant from the National Science Foundation for her project “Towards a Mechanistic Understanding of Landscape-scale Responses of Animal Communities to Urbanization” that will run from 2007-11.

Recognitions

Kathy Corl, Germanic Languages and Literatures, received this year’s Anthony Papalia Award for excellence in teacher education from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.

Saul Cornell, History, has been awarded the David J. Langum, Sr. Prize in legal history for his book, “A Well-Regulated Militia: The Founding Fathers and the Origins of Gun Control in America” (Oxford University Press, 2006).

Hannibal Hamlin, English-OSU Mansfield, has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship at the Folger Shakespeare Library for 2007-08.

L. James Lee and S.T. Yang, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, have been named Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.

Dean Merchant, Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science, was named an honorary member of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.

Barbara Ryden, Astronomy, has earned the first Chambliss Astronomical Writing Award from the American Astronomical Society for her book “Introduction to Cosmology.”

Hojjat Adeli, Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science, Biomedical Informatics, and Neuroscience, was honorary vice chair for the conference Virtual Concept in Cancun, Mexico, Nov. 26-Dec. 1, 2006, and honorary chair of the Organizing Committee for the International Forum on Systems and Mechatronics, Tainan, Taiwan, Dec. 6-8, 2006; and he was appointed to the editorial board of Journal of Internet Technology and Journal of Technology Management in China and is a consulting editor for International Journal of Internet Protocol Technology.

Hazel Morrow-Jones, College of Engineering and City and Regional Planning, has been appointed to the Campus Partners Board of Directors and will chair the Planning and Community Development Committee.
