Roy Stein, professor of evolution, ecology and organismal biology and director of the Aquatic Ecology Laboratory, received the prestigious Silver Eagle Award from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Midwest Region on Jan. 25. The award, the highest honor given by the service’s Great Lakes-Big Rivers Region, recognizes people and organizations for their impressive contributions to wildlife conservation and management.
Stein, who is a nationally known expert in his field and has been at OSU for 30 years, studies community ecology with an emphasis on aquatic ecosystems. His focus is on how major ecological processes such as competition, predation and keystone species structure freshwater communities and how these findings can be used to manage aquatic ecosystems.
Racke to lead hematopathology at Med Center
Frederick Racke has been named director of the Division of Hematopathology in the Department of Pathology at the Medical Center. Racke specializes in production of megakaryocytes from hematopoietic progenitors, which are large white blood cells found in bone marrow that give rise to blood-clot-forming platelets.
Racke, a member of the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center and a staff physician at the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, recently was named pathology cadre leader for the Cancer and Leukemia Group B, a national clinical cooperative group that organizes trials testing new cancer therapies.
Business and Finance names risk management coordinator
Gaibrelle Reissland was appointed risk management coordinator — a new position created as part of the university’s plan to implement a more coordinated approach to enterprise risk management — on Feb. 1. Reissland will help create and maintain this enterprise-wide coordination and integration with oversight and involvement from the senior leadership and the Board of Trustees.
The position reports to Senior Vice President for Business and Finance Bill Shkurti. Reissland has served the Medical Center for 17 years as director of risk management and associate legal counsel for Health Sciences.
Nelson named Student Affairs assistant vice president
Rebecca Nelson, director of the Multicultural Center since 2005, has been promoted to assistant vice president for Student Affairs. She will continue to hold the director’s position while adding new responsibilities for oversight of several other units and initiatives within the Office of Student Affairs. These include Off Campus Student Services, the Parent Association, Student Housing Legal Clinic and community relations.
As assistant vice president, Nelson takes over many of the duties formerly performed by Barbara Rich, who recently retired. Nelson also is a member of the President’s Council on Diversity, the University Senate Committee on Diversity, the Student Affairs Diversity Council and a past chair of the Critical Difference for Women Re-Entry Scholarship Fund.
Faculty asked to register for Commencement
All faculty planning to march in the academic processional at Winter Commencement on March 18 in St. John Arena should notify their college or regional campus dean’s office by March 2. On commencement day, faculty registered to participate in the processional should assemble by 12:45 p.m. in cap and gown in the northeast corner of French Field House.

Goodway to serve on education advisory group
Jacqueline Goodway, associate professor of physical activity and educational services, has been selected to serve on the National Education Task Force. The group is affiliated with the Sub-Committee on Physical Education. NET is an advisory body of education professionals for Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and U.S. Rep. George Miller, D-Calif.
New online database quantifies history
The Millennial Edition of the Historical Statistics of the United States is a new database available through the OSU Libraries. It contains more than 37,000 data series covering nearly all quantifiable aspects of American history. Coverage includes the population, works and welfare, economic structure and performance, economic sectors, and governance and international relations.
The information is fully searchable and downloadable, and users may customize it to reflect their own areas of research interest. Office of Legal Affairs to move
The Office of Legal Affairs will consolidate its Bricker Hall and 33 W. 11th Ave. offices on Feb. 23 into one space on the fifth floor of 1590 N. High St., Suite 500. Christopher Culley, vice president and general counsel, and his 17-member office will be located in the same Gateway building where Human Resources resides. All phone numbers and e-mail addresses will remain the same.
USAC seeking new members
The University Staff Advisory Committee is looking for new members. Staff with at least two years of service who are interested in getting involved with other staff from across the university and learning more about how the university functions can apply. Applications are due Feb. 16 and are available online at usac.osu.edu. Events hosted by USAC include: Presidential Town Meetings, Staff Compensation and Benefit Report, Staff Listen Sessions, Staff Pep Rally, Annual Staff Art Show and the Hidden Benefits Fair.
