Schedule an annual PHA screening

Ongoing

Free Personal Health Assessment screenings are available to faculty and staff Monday through Friday at numerous campus locations.

Offered through the university’s Your Plan for Health initiative, a PHA (or biometric health screening) measures vital health statistics such as blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, weight and height. Screenings and the completion of the online PHA questionnaire are recommended every 12 months. This year, both are key activities in earning points under the Your Plan for Health Incentive Program.

Heart Month Speakers Series continues

As part of the Heart Month Speakers Series at Ross Heart Hospital, some of the Medical Center’s leading specialists in heart disease, vascular medicine and surgery will discuss care and treatment.

The featured speakers are Quinn Capers, cardiovascular medicine, and Sai Sudhakar, cardiothoracic surgery, who will speak on “Coronary Artery Disease and Heart Attack” on Feb. 20. On Feb. 27, Steven Dean, vascular medicine, and Jean Starr, vascular surgery, will talk about “Peripheral Vascular Disease.”

The sessions begin at 6:30 p.m. and seating is limited in the auditorium, so register by calling (800) 293-5123. Free parking is available.

Lecture pinpoints benefits of a diverse culture

Scott Page, professor of political science and economics at Michigan and author of the landmark book “The Difference: How the Power of Diversity Creates Better Groups, Firms, Schools and Societies,” is the featured guest for an evening of critical thinking and engaging conversation during the inaugural Behavioral Decision Making Colloquium Series Lecture.

His topic, “The Diversity Offensive: Why Diversity Matters as Much as Ability and How to Identify and Leverage It,” will show why a diversity of viewpoints in the behavioral decision-making process outperforms groups of like-minded experts, whether in macroeconomic policy making, corporate decision making, the education arena or in the world of interest groups and organizations.

Melton Center hosts renowned law scholar

Feb. 25

OSU’s Melton Center for Jewish Studies will present international law scholar Harry Reicher as this year’s speaker for the Pearl and Troy Feibel Lecture on Judaism and Law at 7:30 p.m. at Moritz College of Law. His lecture, “Whose Jerusalem? Jerusalem and International Law,” is free and open to the public.

Reicher is currently adjunct professor at Penn Law School. From 1995-2004, he was director of International Affairs of Agudath Israel World Organization and its representative to the United Nations, where he practiced international law and diplomacy in the field of human rights, with particular emphasis on freedom of religion. Reicher has pioneered what is effectively a new academic discipline, combining Holocaust studies and law.

‘Blind Rage’ examines Helen Keller’s life

Georgina Kleege, assistant professor of English at Berkeley, will read from her book “Blind Rage: Letters to Helen Keller” (Gallaudet University Press, 2006) at 4:30 p.m. in 311 Denny Hall.

Kleege is the author of several articles and books, including “Sight Unseen” (Yale University Press, 1999), and one of the organizers of the recent “Blind at the Museum” exhibit and conference at Berkeley. Copies of “Blind Rage” will be available for purchase and autographs at a reception following the reading, which is free and open to the public with no registration required.

CURA seeks grant proposals

Through April 2

The Center for Urban and Regional Analysis at Ohio State is accepting seed grant proposals from OSU faculty relating to issues and problems applicable to Ohio’s urban and metropolitan areas, rural areas and related regional issues.

Funding for the program is through the Ohio Urban University Program, a program of the Ohio General Assembly and the Ohio Board of Regents. The proposal deadline is April 2. Contact max.5@osu.edu for more information.

Of Note ...

Engineering hosts high school summer program

Through March 15

The College of Engineering and the Ohio State-Honda Partnership will host the Engineers in Motion Workshop for high-ability high school students June 17-22 on the OSU campus. The workshop is open to high school students completing their ninth or 10th grade who have an interest in engineering. The application deadline is March 15.

Activities include hands-on demonstrations and experiments and a visit to Honda of America in Marysville. Students will stay on campus in dormitories, and housing and meals will be provided. OSU accreditation comments sought

Through March 16

Ohio State is seeking comments from the public about the university in preparation for its periodic evaluation by its regional accreditation agency. Ohio State will undergo a comprehensive evaluation visit April 16-18 by a team representing the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The team will review the university’s ongoing ability to meet the commission’s Criteria for Accreditation. Ohio State has been accredited by the commission since 1913.

Apply now for Stone Laboratory summer science courses

Through March 22

Stone Laboratory, Ohio State’s island campus on Lake Erie, is now accepting applications for its summer 2007 courses, including non-credit workshops for faculty and staff. Students can choose from more than 30 science classes, offered in one- or five-week sessions. Two new courses, Spider Biology and Aquatic Entomology, will be offered this year. Stone Lab classes are open to college students, teachers and high school students for college credit. Scholarships and part-time jobs are available. The deadline for scholarship and job applications is March 12. For more information, visit stonelab.osu.edu/courses/aid.

Help improve international students’ writing abilities

Writing Across the Curriculum will air the documentary “Writing Across Borders: Helping International Students with Writing,” a project funded by Oregon State University (cwl.oregonstate.edu/wab), from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at 300 Younkin Success Center.

The documentary’s main purpose is to help faculty, writing assistants and other professionals work more effectively with international students in classrooms by addressing some of the most significant challenges international students face when writing for American colleges and universities.

Leadership institute prepares tenured faculty

The Women’s Place, in conjunction with the Office of Human Resources, will begin a third class of the President and Provost’s Leadership Institute in June. Institute participants must be tenured faculty members. Ideally, participants will not hold significant leadership positions but will be in a position to do so within two to five years.

The institute strives to increase the pool of potential leaders for those groups traditionally underrepresented in leadership roles. Those interested in participating should notify their dean (or for the libraries, consult your director) by March 2.

Wexner

Local film/video artists have an outlet

Through March 30

The Wexner Center for the Arts is accepting entries from Ohio’s independent media artists for its 11th annual Ohio Short Film and Video Showcase. Those chosen will show their work in a theatrical setting before an audience.

Last year’s capacity crowd witnessed 13 short works by artists from across the state. The 2007 showcase screening takes place 7 p.m. May 12 in the Film/Video Theater.

Pieces must be independently produced, no longer than 20 minutes in length and produced in Ohio within the last 18 months. Entries must be submitted on 1/2-inch VHS videotape, mini-DV or DVD. (Any format of film or video may be screened at the showcase.) Only one entry per person. Works submitted to previous showcases will not be accepted.
