EVENTS

A stitch in time for ailing patients
March 3
The third annual “Quilting Day” hosted by the volunteer Stitching Sisters at the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute will take place from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at The Haimerl Center, 1421 Morse Road, and includes lunch.

This free annual event is a continuation of the group’s project that creates lap quilts for breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy at JamesCare in Dublin, a comprehensive breast health center that is part of The James.

Volunteers can participate in a number of activities to create the quilts, including pinning, ironing and stitching. Volunteers are invited to bring fabric and sewing machines with extension cords. Since May 2005, more than 700 quilts have been distributed.

Admissions reschedules parent/child reception

The reception for faculty and staff with high school sophomore and junior children — originally scheduled for Feb. 14 — has been rescheduled for March 14. The reception will take place from 7-8:30 p.m. in 180 Hagerty Hall. Participants will learn about the academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities for undergraduate students, university tuition benefits for dependent children, scholarships and financial aid opportunities, and regional campus options.

Analyzing afrocentricity to the African American identity

The Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center will present “Sankofa Ofamfa (“A Return to the Past Must be Guided by Critical Examination”): An Analysis of African Cultural Values and Afrocentricity to the African American Identity” by Chauncey Beaty at 6 p.m. at the Community Extension Center, 905 Mt. Vernon Ave.

Beaty, a 2007 M.A. candidate for the Department of African American and African Studies, will examine the standpoint and understanding of African cultural values from continental West Africans in comparison to the diasporic African Americans by analyzing the work of Ghanaian-born Kwame Gyekye and American-born Molefi Kete Asante.

Oliver to speak on wealth, inequality

March 2

Melvin Oliver, dean of the Division of Social Sciences and professor of sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, will deliver a keynote speech followed by a book signing. Oliver will speak on “Increasing Wealth Inequality: From Social Investment to Privatized Citizenship” from noon-1:30 p.m. in the Saxbe Auditorium of Drinko Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Joining with community to solve real-world issues

Sharon Sutton will lecture on “Balancing Student Learning with Community Problem Solving: Case Studies from the University of Washington” from 10-11:30 a.m. at 1590 N. High St., Suite 430. Sutton will explore how the university and community can work together to envision solutions to real-world problems and the advantages and disadvantages of interdisciplinary design workshops for mutually beneficial service-learning.

College seeks prosposals for All-Sports Conference

Through March 1

The College of Education and Human Ecology is seeking presenters for the first All-Sports Conference to be held July 28 on the Columbus campus. The 90-minute sessions will target adults who work with 3- to 18-year-old athletes, including coaches, trainers, managers and sports club owners.

Presentations highlighting the latest trends in youth sports and sports management will cover topics such as health and nutrition, preventing and treating injuries, communicating with parents, coaching with an impact, the ins and outs of college recruiting, cost-effective advertising and tax and accounting tips for club owners.

CURA seeks grant proposals

The Center for Urban and Regional Analysis at Ohio State is accepting seed grant proposals from OSU faculty relating to issues and problems applicable to Ohio’s urban and metropolitan areas, rural areas and related regional issues.

Funding for the program is through the Ohio Urban University Program, a program of the Ohio General Assembly and the Ohio Board of Regents. The proposal deadline is April 2. Contact max.5@osu.edu for more information.

OSU accreditation comments sought

Through March 16

Ohio State is seeking comments from the public about the university in preparation for its periodic evaluation by its regional accreditation agency. The university will undergo a comprehensive evaluation visit April 16-18 by a team representing the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The team will review the university’s ongoing ability to meet the commission’s Criteria for Accreditation. Ohio State has been accredited by the commission since 1913.

Apply now for Stone Laboratory summer science courses

Stone Laboratory, Ohio State’s island campus on Lake Erie, is accepting applications for its summer 2007 courses, including non-credit workshops for faculty and staff. Students can choose from more than 30 science classes, offered in one- or five-week sessions. Two new courses, Spider Biology and Aquatic Entomology, will be offered this year. Students encouraged to enter 2007 International Photography Contest

Through April 13

Students can share their original photos from around the world in the 2007 International Photography Contest, sponsored by the Office of International Education and the Office of International Affairs. The photographs should be creative, original, high quality and must have been taken outside the United States.

First-, second- and third-place awards will be presented along with an indefinite number of “honorable mentions” in each of three categories: People, Places and OSU Spirit. A “Best of Show” also will be selected. Entry forms are available at oie.osu.edu/photocontest/Default.aspx. The deadline is April 13. Metro High School accepting applications

Through March 7

Metro High School will have an information session for any eighth-grade parent interested in enrolling their student as a ninth grader for the 2007-08 school year.

The session will be held at Metro High School, 1929 Kenny Road, from 6-7 p.m. March 6. Up to 100 ninth-grade students will be accepted at Metro, a countywide public high school offering accelerated programs for students in math, science, engineering and technology. The school will accept applications for enrollment until March 7.

Leadership institute prepares tenured faculty

March 2

The Women’s Place, in conjunction with the Office of Human Resources, will begin a third class of the President and Provost’s Leadership Institute in June. Institute participants must be tenured faculty members. Ideally, participants will not hold significant leadership positions but will be in a position to do so within two to five years.

The institute strives to increase the pool of potential leaders for those groups traditionally underrepresented in leadership roles. Those interested in participating should notify their dean (or for the libraries, consult your director) by March 2.

Gaitskill reading explores sexual complex

Mary Gaitskill, whose novel “Veronica” (2005) was listed as one of the “10 Best Books of 2005” by The New York Times and was a finalist for the 2006 National Book Award, will give a free public reading at 7 p.m. at the Wexner Film/Video Theater.

Presented by the OSU Creative Writing Program Reading Series, Gaitskill writes about the complex friendship between a former teen runaway and party girl and Veronica, an eccentric older woman. Sex for them represents a desperate and unsuccessful attempt to break out of social isolation. Sexual needs, practices and obsessions also reveal much about each character’s defeated hopes, innermost fears and buried sufferings. For more information, call 292-2242.
