Mary Juhas, Materials Science and Engineering, and John Lippold, Industrial Welding and Systems Engineering, received a $224,051 grant from the Office of Naval Research for “The Use of Physical Simulation to Reveal the Relationship between Process Parameters and Microstructural Evolution in Friction Stir Processed Ti-5111.” Rongxing Li, Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science, received a $179,952 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Ohio Sea grant for the project “LIDAR and Submeter Satellite Stereo Imagery for Lake Erie Shoreline Mapping.” Amanda Rodewald, received a $421,300 grant from the National Science Foundation for her project “Towards a Mechanistic Understanding of Landscape-scale Responses of Animal Communities to Urbanization.” The Olentangy River Wetland Research Park in SENR received a $480,300 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for 2007-08 for a project entitled “Wilma H. Don Harris, Music, received a commission from the Koussevitzky Music Foundation in the Library of Congress to write a piece for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra for the 2008-09 season. John Josephson and Balakrishran Chandrasekaran, Computer Science and Engineering, received a U.S. patent for “Multi-Criterial Decision Making System and Method,” with Mark Carroll and Naresh Sundaram Iyer. Lee Martin, English, gave a fiction reading at Otterbein College, Westerville, Jan. 31. Ken Rinaldo, Art and Technology, was one of the nominees for a 2006 TopCat Inventor of the Year Award for his work, the Autotelematic Spider Bots. Clint Roberts, Statistics, has been selected as a winner of the student paper competition jointly sponsored by the Government Statistics, Social Statistics and Survey Research Methods sections of the American Statistical Association for his paper “Imputing Missing Data in the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports.” Neil Smeck, School of Environment and Natural Resources, received an honorary membership and award from the Association of Ohio Pedologists at the association’s annual meeting, Highbanks Metro Park, Lewis Center, Jan. 24. Amy Youngs, Art and Technology, has artwork in an exhibition in Toronto called “Zoo,” which opened Feb. 2, and will have pieces in the exhibition “Phantom Power,” in Buffalo, N.Y., which opened Feb 17. SERVICE Melvin Shipp, Optometry, was a guest speaker at Johnson & Johnson Vision Care Institute’s program in honor of Black History Month, Jacksonville, Fla., Feb. 12. David Staley, History, was a panelist in the session “Learning with Images: Aligning IT Decisions with Visual Literacy Practices” at the 2007 Educause Learning Initiative annual meeting, Atlanta, Ga., when, Jan. 22-24.
