2-27-2007 Staff spotlight 3/01/07Mary Capoccia, an Ohio State employee for the past 24 years, works in the School of Environment and Natural Resources Why did you choose to work at Ohio State? A recommendation from a family member working for OSU at that time. What do you like about your job? I can honestly say that in all the years working for the university, there has never been a day when I wished that I did not have to go in to work. My daily responsibilities, and my colleagues, have made my job an enjoyable one to have. What would you improve at Ohio State? A lot of changes have taken place in the last 20+ years — mostly bureaucratic. I would like to see a return to more simple times when rules and policies were something to follow rather than fear. What advice would you give a new employee? Take advantage of the excellent benefits; especially the tuition assistance program for employees and their family members. If you weren’t working at Ohio State, what would you rather be doing? I love to cook so having a restaurant might be fun or I would like to help my husband with his business. What honor or recognition are you most proud of? Although I have never received the University Distinguished Staff Award, I have been nominated by current and former supervisors and I am honored that they felt I was deserving of the award. Who is your hero? I have many people in my life who I hold in very high regard. To name only one, I would choose my mother. She may not consider herself a “hero” using the literal meaning of the word, but she certainly is “heroic” to me and my family. If you were the university president for a day, what would you do? I would make an effort to personally thank the college, school and department administrators (deans, directors, chairs). They have a formidable position that requires them to fulfill expectations set by higher-level administration as well as be responsible to faculty, staff and students who look to them for leadership and answers to everyday issues and concerns.
