National news anchor Lehrer to discuss book at WOSU luncheon

WOSU Public Media, in partnership with the Columbus Metropolitan Club, will host a luncheon with Jim Lehrer at noon March 14 in the North Ballroom of the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

Lehrer, who has recently authored the book “The Phony Marine,” will deliver a keynote speech focusing on public broadcasting and journalism and participate in a question-and-answer session. WOSU 820 Open Line host Fred Andrle will introduce Lehrer and serve as moderator.

Tickets to the luncheon are $75 and may be purchased by calling the Columbus Metropolitan Club ticket line at 464-3220. A book signing will follow the luncheon, and “The Phony Marine” will be available for purchase.

Lehrer is the award-winning executive editor and anchor of PBS’s “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer,” a one-hour evening news program that airs locally on WOSU.

Before arriving at PBS, Lehrer served three years as an infantry officer in the Marine Corps, 10 years in Dallas as a newspaperman and then as host of a local experimental news program on public television. In 1972, he came to Washington and teamed up with Robert MacNeil to cover the Senate Watergate hearings for PBS.

In 1975, they began what became “The MacNeil/Lehrer Report,” and, in 1983, “The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour,” the first 60-minute evening news program on television. When MacNeil retired in 1995, the program was renamed “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.”

Lehrer, a graduate of Victoria College in Texas and the University of Missouri, has been honored with numerous awards for journalism, including a presidential National Humanities Medal in 1999.

In the last five presidential elections, he moderated 10 of the nationally televised candidate debates. He has written 16 novels, two memoirs and three plays.
