3-13-2007 Staff spotlight 3/15/07Monica Johnson of the Department of Human Nutrition has worked at Ohio State for the past seven years. Why did you choose to work at Ohio State? My sister introduced it to me and it looked like a place where I could grow, and I’ve been growing ever since. What do you like about your job? I love the diversity and the opportunity to meet new people. I also work with a great group of people. I have a heart to help and my job is not just sitting at a desk; I help change the world and people’s lives. What would you improve at Ohio State? I would offer more online courses so students could work and save for the future or that time between graduation and a full-time job. I would also work on ways to improve staff morale. We must work together for mutual benefits for the individual and the university. What advice would you give a new employee? Become familiar with every aspect of the university, always look for ways to improve and give great customer service. Go above and beyond the call of duty; the incident might be forgotten but your kindness will forever be remembered. If you weren’t working at Ohio State, what would you rather be doing? With the constant changes in our world today, it is best to focus on the present, but if I had to give an answer it would be to “save the world.” What honor or recognition are you most proud of? Obtaining my degree while balancing full-time work and family life. Who is your hero? I do not have a particular hero; my heroes are those who have made a difference in my life. If we think about it, each of us has numerous heroes, whether for a particular moment or throughout our lifetime. What is your favorite activity outside of work? I enjoy spending quality time with my family. I work and attend school and they need to know that I support them as much as they have supported me. What are you going to do when you retire? Finish enjoying life. If you were the university president for a day, what would you do? I would make sure I visit each and every department and meet with each and every student — even if it takes my entire term. Presidency is the highest honor. If I am given that opportunity then it must mean I am an expert in my area. The only way to be an expert is to know the university from corner to corner.
