Spring 2007 Arts Preview

Spring quarter bursting with color, sound.

What's on tap

Fans of computer animation, modern ballet and music will get to see the latest advances these art forms have to offer during spring quarter.

But those in the “old school” crowd shouldn’t fret. The spring quarter arts schedule promises to bring diverse talent to the university with a large lineup of exhibitions, performances and concerts. In the following pages, you’ll find an overview of the offerings from Ohio State’s three primary arts outlets, along with ticket and other essential information.

From art exhibitions to downtown dance performances and weekends full of music, the College of the Arts has put together a full roster of events that run through June. Starting this month with the “Technology Expanding the Horizon” exhibition, the Hopkins Hall Gallery + Corridor will host artworks produced by students and faculty.

In May, art and technology fans should take note of the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design Open House. On-site demonstrations will highlight student, staff and faculty work in computer animation, new graphics technology and digital storytelling.

Not to be outdone, the Wexner Center’s spring exhibitions bring something new to the galleries: “The State Fare,” a visual arts exhibition that will focus exclusively on artists from this region. Wexner staff invited artists of all media to submit examples of their work for review by an expert panel that included Elizabeth Smith from Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art.

Musicians and dancers also will appear at the Wexner. Noted choreographer Karole Armitage will bring her dance troupe to the Thurber Theatre for an evening of modern ballet later this month. Cynthia Hopkins, a Bessie Award-winning singer and actress, will perform her hybrid work “Most Don’t Whip ’Um” in April.

Probably the biggest name in music coming to campus is Eric Clapton, whose April show at the Schottenstein Center will feature old favorites and new tunes from his latest album.
