Conference

Theatre conference features graduate students
April 13-14
The Graduate Syndicate of the Department of Theatre is sponsoring an interdisciplinary conference featuring the work of graduate students from Ohio State, Northwestern University and the University of Maryland-College Park. The goal is to gather together graduate students for a lively examination of the academic world and the one being shaped.

The conference will feature lectures from Susan Manning (theatre and performance studies, Northwestern), Franklin Hildy (theatre and performance studies, Maryland), and OSU’s Distinguished University Professor in theatre, Tom Postlewait. The three faculty also will respond to all papers presented at a final roundtable.

OHR offers Retirement Choices Forum
March 22
The Office of Human Resources is offering a forum to newly hired faculty and staff to help with decisions regarding available retirement choices under ARP/OPERS/STRS. The forum will be held in the Office of Human Resources, 1590 N. High St., Suite 430 from noon-1 p.m.

This seminar is designed for faculty and staff who have an appointment of at least 75 percent FTE and have been with the university for less than 120 days. At the forum, a benefits representative will review, compare and summarize the plan options under the OPERS/STRS retirement systems and the provisions of the Alternative Retirement Plan.

Faculty Club hosts charity art auction
March 30
Some 100 artworks and intriguing university collectibles will be offered for sale at the Faculty Club’s third annual art auction. The auction will benefit the Faculty Club building endowment.

A silent auction and preview of the 8 p.m. live auction will start at 6 p.m. Both auctions are free. David Terry, a Columbus auctioneer, artist and restorer, will preside over the sales. Hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be available.

Artists and collectors with ties to Ohio State and central Ohio are contributing artworks to the auctions, including paintings, prints, sculpture, glass and ceramics. Among the artists represented are Sidney Chafetz, William Hogarth, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Karen Sterrett, Mary Ann Sullivan, Terry and tribal artists of Africa and the Pacific Rim.

Exhibits

Honored faculty’s chosen books on display
Through March 30
University Libraries is hosting a Faculty Recognition Book Exhibit in the Sullivant Library through March 30. The exhibit includes books selected by OSU faculty granted tenure or promotion in 2006-07 and are book-plated in their name as recognition of their accomplishments. A commemorative brochure listing the honorees, books selected and personal statements will be available at the exhibit in the Leisure Reading Room, and the books are available for circulation. The brochure also will become part of the University Libraries’ Knowledge Bank.

The ancient Chinese were very aware of the environment and how their bodies reacted to their surroundings. Learn how they lived in harmony with nature through dietary balance from noon-1 p.m. in 107 Hamilton Hall with “Dietary Therapy According to Traditional Chinese Methods,” part of the OSU Faculty and Staff Wellness Program Lunch and Learn series.

Acupuncturist and Licensed Massage Therapist Mary Dinneen will show participants how to select foods that create balance as one of the primary keys to disease prevention. CURA seeks grant proposals
Through April 2
The Center for Urban and Regional Analysis is accepting seed grant proposals from faculty relating to issues and problems applicable to Ohio’s urban and metropolitan areas, rural areas and related regional issues. Funding for the program is through the Ohio Urban University Program, a program of the Ohio General Assembly and the Ohio Board of Regents. The proposal deadline is April 2. Research Grants program seeks student-faculty ePartnerships
Through April 13
TELR’s Research on Research (r2) Grants program is underway for the fourth consecutive year, seeking proposals from faculty-undergraduate student partners who will develop a multimedia research portfolio over summer quarter. Interdisciplinary teams are welcomed and encouraged.

Participants work in the technology-rich environment of the Digital Union and are featured in a public showcase at the end of quarter. Faculty acquire a research portfolio for recruitment, public relations and academic purposes. The deadline is April 13. Nominations sought for academic advisors

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2007 Outstanding Advisor Awards for undergraduate academic advising, sponsored by the Academic Advising Association of Ohio State and the Office of Academic Affairs. 2008-09 Fulbright Scholar award competition open
Through Aug. 1
The Fulbright Scholar Program, funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars, offers approximately 800 awards annually to U.S. faculty, librarians and professionals to lecture and/or conduct research abroad. Positions are available in nearly 130 countries and in virtually all disciplines.

Of Note ...
Faculty sought to teach London Honors program
Through April 9
The University Honors and Scholars Center is accepting faculty letters of interest for the London Honors program 2007. This five-credit-hour class (H296) is taught autumn quarter and meets Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:30 p.m., culminating in an eight-day study tour of London in December.

London Honors will have six sections of 20 students or less. Faculty will be paired with a staff member to teach one section for first-quarter freshmen honors students. The class meets 10 weeks throughout the quarter. Each week all four classes will meet for a common lecture and then will break out into class sections for discussion. Each faculty member is expected to lecture or co-lecture one of the classes.

Four areas that have been covered consistently are: London Society Today and Multiculturalism, History of London, Shakespeare or Literary London, and London in Theatre, although there is flexibility in topics. The group will determine three additional lecture topics.

Forum on building children’s self-esteem
April 11
The Office of Human Resources and The Women’s Place are sponsoring a discussion facilitated by Yvonne Gustafson, Ph.D., with the Elizabeth Blackwell Center. Self-esteem is related to a variety of life choices and outcomes, e.g., positive peer interactions, creative problem solving and psychological well being in adults. This hour together is designed to help attendees better understand the nature of self-esteem, how it develops and the role of parents and adults in fostering self-esteem in children and others.
