Gee taps Weiler to lead university’s development effort

He helped Penn State’s Grand Destiny Campaign exceed its $1.3 billion goal

Ohio State’s new senior vice president for University Development brings a wealth of fundraising experience in higher education to his position.

Peter Weiler, who currently serves as vice president for development at Penn State, will take over the position early this year. He is expected to complete his transition here by March.

“Peter Weiler is one of the most experienced and foremost leaders in development and alumni relations in the country,” said President E. Gordon Gee. “We are very fortunate to attract him to Ohio State at this time in our history.”

In his new position, Weiler will oversee Ohio State’s development organization and all fundraising efforts and initiatives, including the development activity across all colleges and units.

He also will serve as president of The Ohio State University Foundation and will be responsible for planning and leading a major university-wide fundraising campaign, to be announced at a future date.

“I welcome the challenge of helping Ohio State to re-imagine its fundraising program for an exciting new era,” Weiler said.

Weiler began his career in higher education administration at UCLA in 1979 as assistant director of undergraduate orientation programs. In 1980, he was appointed assistant dean of students and later promoted to associate dean of students.

In 1986 he joined University of Vermont as its first major gifts officer and was later appointed director of alumni relations. He became assistant vice president and executive director of the Penn State Alumni Association in 1989.

In 1996, Weiler was named associate vice president for development and alumni relations at Penn State. He was named vice president in 2006. He has consulted for several other universities in the area of institutional advancement and served on several commissions and boards. Penn State recently finished its seven-year Grand Destiny Campaign surpassing its $1.3 billion goal.

Weiler was born in Hartford, Conn., and raised in Vermont. He holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in higher education administration from the University of Vermont. He continued his education at UCLA taking post-graduate work in higher education administration.

Jeff Kaplan, special assistant to the president and vice president for business development and collaborative advancement at the OSU Medical Center, whom President Gee had appointed to serve during the search, will continue to work with Weiler through his transition.
