1-9-2008 Newsbriefs, 1/10/08Doctoral program review process on track for implementation in 2008-09 academic year Review has begun on individual colleges’ assessments of their doctoral programs. This review is part of the overall process to identify the strongest programs within the university — those that will receive enhanced funding support — and to disinvest or reorganize the weakest ones.
The deadline for colleges to present their assessments was Jan. 4. Graduate School Dean Patrick Osmer and the Doctoral Review Assessment Committee will now review each assessment in order to present a preliminary recommendation to Executive Vice President and Provost Joe Alutto by the end of February. After the college deans review the recommendations, Osmer will make final recommendations to Alutto in March. A report will be presented to the Board of Trustees later this year, with implementation of the recommendations to begin for the 2008-09 academic year. Doctoral programs were reviewed for overall quality and centrality to Ohio State’s mission; new or emerging opportunities where Ohio State can excel; ways to gain a competitive edge over other institutions; plans to improve diversity; new and focused approaches to attracting high-quality graduate students; and commitment of the colleges to the doctoral program; as well as more measurable data such as GRE scores and placement of doctoral graduates. Members of the Doctoral Review Assessment Committee are: David Bloome, professor, School of Teaching and Learning; Craig Davis, professor, School of Environment and Natural Resources; Gerald Frankel, professor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering; Barbara Hanawalt, King George III Chair of British History, Department of History; Brian Joseph, Distinguished University Professor, Department of Linguistics; James King, interim chair, Department of Neuroscience; Kathleen McGraw, professor, Department of Political Science; Karin Musier-Forsyth, Ohio Eminent Scholar, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry; Patrick Osmer (committee chair), Graduate School; Michael Racke, chair, Department of Neurology; William Russel, dean, Graduate School, Princeton University; John Sheridan, professor, College of Dentistry, Oral Biology; Julian Thayer, Ohio Eminent Scholar, Department of Psychology; Richard Wheeler, dean, Graduate School, University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign.
Ed Maag, a Cincinnati-based dentist who graduated from Ohio State’s College of Dentistry in 1956, made a commitment of $1 million to the college.
Alumni Association starts fundraiser for New Orleans’ schoolsThe gift establishes the financial foundation for the college’s new and/or renovated building project. The new screening clinic and technology area will be renamed for Maag during a ribbon-cutting ceremony this month. The College of Dentistry is working on a $30 million campaign, half of which will be used to renovate more than 50-year-old Postle Hall. Inspired by the football team’s trip to New Orleans to play in the BCS National Championship game, the Alumni Association is helping the continuous rebuilding efforts there by establishing the Recovery School District Victory Fund with the Greater New Orleans Foundation.
Winter quarter academic deadline adjustments The Recovery School District is comprised of more than 100 New Orleans schools that were most adversely affected by Hurricane Katrina. Money raised will help provide academic programs and support services for New Orleans students. Due to a shorter winter quarter, a few deadline adjustments have been approved, including: The “third Friday” academic deadline (the last day to drop without a “W,” register for audit and register for P/NP) will be moved from Jan. 18 to Jan. 25; the “seventh Friday” academic deadline (the last day to drop/withdraw without petitioning) will be moved from Feb. 15 to Feb. 22.

USAC membership applications being acceptedAs associate dean, he will act as the primary liaison to campus faculty and take on a multitude of duties with the campus’ faculty. Pandey will fill the position of Chris Friesen, who will return to teaching mathematics full time on campus. The University Staff Advisory Committee, an advisory body to the university president that works to maintain an active and participatory line of communication with the university community, is now accepting membership applications for the 2008-11 term. Members are appointed by the university president. Requirements for selection include: At least 75 percent full-time appointment, direct supervisor approval, willingness to meet at bi-monthly meetings, contribution to at least one subcommittee and participation in USAC-sponsored events.
