Topspot  Sue Jones, who works in the Office of University Relations, has been at Ohio State for 33 years.

Why did you choose to work at Ohio State?

Ohio State is an exciting place and has so much to offer. As a child, I knew I wanted to be a part of it someday — and here I am.

What do you like about your job?

The variety — I get to work with all offices on campus, throughout the city and state. I have had the opportunity to travel and see how Ohio State is impacting lives.

What would you improve at Ohio State?

The bureaucracy related to fiscal and human resources issues. We all need to be accountable, but it would be great to have the processes streamlined.

What advice would you give a new employee?

Get involved. There are so many programs and activities offered. This is a wonderful way to meet people and make the “bigness” of Ohio State more personal.

If you weren’t working at Ohio State, what would you rather be doing?

I would like to work with disadvantaged young women — helping them realize they can fulfill their dreams. Making a difference in someone’s life is the ultimate reward.

Who is your hero?

I feel there are many heroes in our world — people who have the courage to fight for what they believe in.

What is your favorite activity outside of work?

I enjoy being creative and love activities that range from portrait drawing, baking, decorating my house. I find this all very relaxing. Martha Stewart, watch out!

What are you going to do when you retire?

Actually I retired this past June and am a returning retiree — I love Ohio State! When I really retire, I want to travel and enjoy life.

If you were the university president for a day, what would you do?

This means I would have to be as great of a president as President Gee — this would be a challenge I absolutely would not even attempt.

Buckeye Alert System test contacts nearly 30K phones

The university conducted a test of the Buckeye Alert System at noon Jan. 16 and sent text or voice messages to almost 14,000 registered cell phone numbers, and almost as many campus telephones.

Faculty, students and staff are reminded that in the event of a real emergency situation, they also would be instructed to tune into WOSU 820 AM, Ohio State’s official source of news and information about an emergency affecting the university community.

In a real emergency, additional details also would be posted on the OSU Web site (osu.edu) and sent from Public Safety via e-mail. Faculty, staff, students and parents can register online at buckeyealert.osu.edu/notify/index.php to have their number included on the text message alert system.
