GLBT Awareness Weeks events scheduled
Through Jan. 30
A series of community outreach, education and engagement programs will take place throughout the month of January in honor of GLBT Awareness Weeks. Jan. 29 — “Working Through Change and Transition,” noon-1 p.m., 4138 Physics Building, instructor Patrice Rancour.
Based on the work of William Bridges, this presentation identifies the three predictable stages of change and transition and offers insight to successfully cope with the unavoidable landmines associated with each stage.
Feb. 5 — “Women and Supplements,” noon-1 p.m., 104 Parks Hall (Student Lounge), instructor Bella Mehta.
Confused about natural product supplements? Are they safe, alone or in combination with other medicines? This discussion will dispel the myths and provide the truth for these commonly asked questions.
Feb. 7 — “Urinary Incontinence in Women: Diagnosis and Treatment Options” noon-1 p.m., 136 Ramseyer Hall, instructor Randee Masciola.
This presentation will focus on the conditions that cause this problem in women, recommendations for prevention and treatment options.

Mehta to discuss women’s cardiovascular disease
Jan. 31
Laxmi Mehta will discuss “Cardiovascular Disease in Women” at 4 p.m. in 264 Newton Hall. The discussion will cover the statistics regarding women and heart disease, the symptoms of heart disease in women and how they differ from those in men, the risk factors for heart disease and how to modify one’s risk.

In addition, a voluntary risk assessment form will be supplied to determine if you are at risk for cardiovascular disease. Anyone who is interested in women’s cardiovascular health, preparing to become a health care professional or currently working in the health care setting is welcome to attend. Fisher to host Deloitte Business Plan Competition

Deadline Jan. 29
Registration is under way for the Deloitte Business Plan Competition at Fisher College of Business. The competition provides a forum for faculty, students and community entrepreneurs to win more than $145,000 in cash and services to use as start-up funds for business ideas.

USAC membership
applications being sought

The University Staff Advisory Committee is currently accepting membership applications for the 2008-11 term. USAC maintains an active and participatory line of communication with the university community and provides a forum through which staff can raise, discuss and make recommendations on nonacademic issues and activities.

Winter dissertation writing groups now forming
Ongoing
Writing Center dissertation groups, which gather to provide feedback, are open to Ph.D. candidates in any discipline. Groups have three to four writers and meet one hour per week at a convenient time.
These collaborative and collegial meetings are a great way for candidates to stay motivated, explore interdisciplinary connections and receive individualized feedback on their work from colleagues and a WC consultant.

“Family Voice and Choice: Advocating For Your Child’s Needs” will be presented at 7 p.m. during COSI Family Friday Night, 333 W. Broad St.
Stephen Gavazzi, co-director of the Center for Family Research in the College of Education and Human Ecology, will facilitate the one-hour session. The program is included with the discounted price of general Family Friday Night admission ($7 per person or free to COSI members).
