2-6-2008 Newsbriefs, 2/7/08Haurin named chair of Department of Economics Donald Haurin, professor of economics, has been appointed chair of the department beginning July 1 by the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
Haurin joined the faculty at Ohio State in 1975 and holds appointments with the John Glenn School of Public Affairs and Fisher College of Business. His primary area of research is real estate economics.
Vidmar joins Alumni Association staffTony Vidmar, a 1983 honors graduate of Ohio State, has joined the OSU Alumni Association as its senior director of development and sponsorship.
Vidmar recently served as director of development for the Purdue University College of Science, where he contributed to Purdue’s successful $1.7 billion capital campaign. He also was director of scholarship and endowment development at Northwest Nazarene University. Abercrombie & Fitch gives $10M to OSU medical programs Central Ohio-based retailer Abercrombie & Fitch is giving Ohio State $10 million to support research and patient care initiatives in inflammatory bowel/digestive diseases at the OSU Medical Center and in women’s oncology at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. With the receipt of the initial funds from the gift, the Board of Trustees approved the creation of two endowed funds, the Abercrombie & Fitch Women’s Oncology Center Endowment Fund and the Abercrombie & Fitch Fund in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
This gift will add to the success of the Medical Center’s “The Power to Change Lives” fundraising campaign, which to date has raised more than $385 million to support Ohio State’s three-part mission of research, education and patient care. Gee attends first Town Meeting President E. Gordon Gee will host his first Town Meeting from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 20 at 1213 Ross Heart Hospital. Ohio State staff are welcome to attend the free event, sponsored by the University Staff Advisory Committee, and ask questions of Gee as well as other top administrators, including Executive Vice President and Provost Joe Alutto, Senior Vice President of Business and Finance Bill Shkurti and Associate Vice President for Human Resources Larry Lewellen.

Moritz Chair in Alternative Dispute Resolution at the Moritz College of Law, will be inducted into the Academy of Women of Achievement for her contributions to resolution programs in the Ohio Courts and for her help transforming the demographic within the College of Law.
Those honored demonstrate the YWCA vision of the elimination of racism and the empowerment of women; giving back to the community through time, talent and/or resources; helping women and girls achieve their goals; and leadership in her profession and/or community. Rogers will be inducted April 9 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
Israel trip to further agricultural ties with Ohio Keith Smith, director of OSU Extension, and Steve Slack, director of the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, are participating in “The Ohio Agricultural Trade and Education Mission to Israel,” a trip to build relations and learn more about the country’s agriculture industry and how it can benefit Ohio.
Smith and Slack hope to gain a better understanding of how the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences can get more involved in further collaborations with the Negev Foundation, an organization dedicated to improving trade and research in agriculture between Ohio and Israel. They will join 61 other Ohioans from various agricultural sectors on the Feb. 9-20 trip.

Kasey to lead Medical Center expansion Jay Kasey has been named interim executive program director of the OSU Medical Center’s $1 billion planned expansion. He will provide day-to-day coordination and oversight for the project, which is to be completed in 2015. He also will lead the search for a permanent director. Kasey will work under the direction of university and Medical Center leaders to manage all aspects of the expansion, including funding and construction logistics. Recruited to Ohio State in 2007 as chief operating officer of the OSU Health System, Kasey has been instrumental in helping to develop the goals and strategic direction of the hospitals.
