I started working in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures when I was a work-study student. After graduation, I realized that I really enjoyed the great working environment that OSU provided to its employees. So I decided to use what I learned from OSU to help the department and the students.
What do you like about your job? I love the working environment, people and the departments that I have always been associated with. Everyone has always been very nice and helpful.
What advice would you give a new employee? I was once a new employee, so I understand that it is difficult in the beginning. Just keep an open mind to learn as much as possible and give your best performance at work.
What would you improve at Ohio State? I noticed that OSU is considering employees’ health, and there are lots of programs and lectures about health being offered by the HR department. I am very glad to see that our health has been considered. I would like to improve Ohio State by allowing all staff and faculty members to get free gym services and free yoga/stretching classes every day.
Of what honor or recognition are you most proud? I am honored to be on the staff feature in Topspot for onCampus. It meant a lot to me because I am being recognized by the faculty and staff in my department who nominated me.
Who is your hero? My father, Richard Chu, is my hero. In order to provide us a better education, he gave up his career in Taiwan and took the whole family to the United States without knowing a single word of English. It was a brave decision for him to make, and I have always thanked him for the sacrifices he made for me and my family.
What is your favorite activity outside of work? OSU Wellness Lunch and Learn provides a free after-work exercise program to all staff and faculty. After a long day of work, it’s great to join the yoga and stretching classes. I always feel refreshed after the class.
What are you going to do when you retire? I would love to travel around the world with my significant other. That has always been a dream of mine. I like exploring the world and being able to leave my footprints on every place I’ve been.
To nominate a staff member for the next issue, e-mail us at oncampus@osu.edu and let us know in 50 words or less why we should feature them. Topnews OSU student draws national honor Ohio State student Josh Lotz has earned a spot on the prestigious USA Today All-USA College Academic First Team, featured in the Feb. 14 USA Today Life section. The award was presented to 20 undergraduate students who excel in scholarship while working to benefit society. Lotz, a senior earning an MA in Chinese and BS in biochemistry, is currently studying in Bejing. In 2007, he was named a Truman Scholar, and in 2006 he co-founded the Global Heath Initiative, which organizes global-health related events, lectures and study-abroad opportunities for OSU students. Lotz organized a small community school in Tibet in 2003 where he taught English to more than 100 local residents. Lotz is the second consecutive Ohio State student named to the All-USA College Academic First Team. Last year, Yoonhee Patricia Ha received the award.
