2-20-2008 Newsbriefs, 2/21/08Stone Lab accepting summer 2008 applications Stone Laboratory, Ohio State’s island campus on Lake Erie, is currently accepting applications for its summer 2008 classes. Courses are open to educators, college and high school students. Applications are due March 21 for college students and educators and March 11 for high school students.
Complete course listings and downloadable applications are available at stonelab.osu.edu/courses. USAC elects new officers The University Staff Advisory Committee has elected its new slate of officers, who will begin their 12-month terms July 1.
Katie Hall, a talent management consultant in the Office of Human Resources and an eight-year staff member, was elected chair. She will be starting her third year on USAC and is the committee’s recorder this year.Beth McCarthy, a clinical research specialist in cardiovascular medicine, was chosen vice chair. She has been at OSU for 12 years and will be a second-year USAC member. Duke Morgan was elected treasurer. He has 19 years at OSU, will be starting his second year on USAC and works in University Libraries facilities and security. Meg Peterseim, grants manager in the College of Nursing, was elected recorder and has been at OSU for four years. USAC advocates on behalf of staff with university administration, and members are chosen by the president for three-year terms. USAC’s main contributions are the Staff Compensation and Benefits Report and quarterly Town Meetings as well as sponsorships of the Hidden Benefits Fair, Staff Arts and Crafts Exhibit and the Rally for Wellness. New Surplus Property Management System announced The Office of the Controller is implementing a new Surplus Property Management System that will replace the Treasure or Trash system.
The new system will provide electronic submittal of surplus forms, online notification to the Asset Management department and OSURF regarding asset retirements and real-time inventory of items in the surplus warehouse. Upon implementation, all submissions of surplus material must be initiated by completing an electronic disposal request from the new online system. Information on how to get department and security access has been communicated to all senior fiscal officers. System user training sessions will be provided from March-April. Vote for Leadership Awards through Feb. 29 Faculty and staff are encouraged to vote for two of this year’s Leadership Awards: The Student Organization Program and Student Organization Web site. A popular vote will account for 20 percent of each applicant’s overall score, with the remaining 80 percent coming from the judges’ review of application materials.

Free income tax preparation assistance available through Ohio Benefit Bank The Governor’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives and the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks have launched a statewide effort to provide free federal and state income tax return preparation assistance to households with incomes below $54,000 per year. The assistance is offered through the Ohio Benefit Bank, a service that provides free tax and benefits help for low- and moderate-income Ohioans.
For assistance, visit obb.ohio.gov through April 15. Households earning less than $54,000 may utilize the site’s free online tax preparation program, use the site’s locator to find Benefit Bank counselor-assisted tax help or call the Benefit Bank hotline at (800) 648-1176. Black Enterprise magazine ranks Fisher certification program in its top 10 Fisher College of Business’ Lean Training Manager Certification program was ranked by Black Enterprise magazine as a top Executive Education program. According to the February 2008 edition of the magazine, the Lean Manager Certification offering is “ideal for mid- to top-level executives.”
Fisher’s course, which is specifically designed for use in an administrative and service industry environment, was listed in the Top Ten Executive Education programs. Other schools making the list were the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, Columbia University Graduate School of Business, Harvard University, Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management and Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Volunteers needed for Women in Science Day Volunteers are needed to guide small groups of girls to and from 24 different workshops during the 24th Women in Science Day to be held on campus March 14. About 300 girls in grades six through eight and their teachers will attend. OSU students, faculty and staff of either gender are invited to volunteer. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Drake Performance and Event Center Main Lounge.
