I have always loved Ohio State, and so coming to OSU as an employee was sort of a homecoming for me. I grew up in Columbus and graduated from the College of Agriculture, School of Home Economics. When I moved back to Columbus in 1990, it was to begin a new job with the Office of Disability Services. I worked on the Columbus campus a couple days and at Mansfield and Lima the rest of the week. I started advising in 1997 in University College working with human ecology pre-majors. Today I advise both majors and pre majors in the Department of Consumer Sciences in the College of Education and Human Ecology.
What do you like about your job? I love working with students of all kinds. Their enthusiasm is great. To be able to help them succeed in their academic programs, graduate and go on to become successful adults is a real privilege.
What would you improve at Ohio State? The university is continually improving benefits in order to improve employees’ work life. Sometimes this process seems to move at a snail’s pace, but the improvements I’ve seen in the 14 years I have worked here are many. I urge the administration to continue to listen to employees’ concerns and strive to make the necessary changes to continue to improve our work life and space.
Who is your hero? My heroine is my mother. She recently passed on and I realize how much impact she had on my life. She was always a positive, uncomplaining supporter of all that I did. I miss her ready ear to listen to my complaints, my successes, my trials and my daily exasperations.
What is your favorite activity outside of work? I participate in two Community Concert Bands. I played trumpet for many years, but three years ago I began to play euphonium. When the weather is warmer, I ride motorcycles (as a passenger) with my best friend. We have ridden all over Ohio. I have seen parts of Ohio I never knew existed.
What are you going to do when you retire? I would love to travel (the motorcycle would be great transportation!!). I want to enjoy seeing my grandchildren as they participate in their activities as well.
To nominate a staff member for the next issue, e-mail us at oncampus@osu.edu and let us know in 50 words or less why we should feature them. Topnews E-mail upgrade finished; migration begins The hardware and software upgrade of Ohio State’s central webmail/e-mail system is complete and OIT has begun a phased migration for all central “@osu.edu” accounts. The new system is designed to be more robust and have improved functionality, and includes a redesigned webmail interface. The move began March 3, with staff accounts being moved to the new system. No migration will take place during finals week. Faculty accounts will be moved March 19 after grades have been posted and student migration will begin March 20. Shifts for other affiliated groups, such as alumni and consultants, will occur at the end of March. The change is intended to be transparent, having minimal impact on users. However, all webmail users will be required to log into a “Migration Assistant Webpage.” This page will direct users to the correct web server to access e-mail during migration.
