Deadline to march in Winter Commencement processional approaching

Faculty planning to march in the academic processional at Winter Commencement on March 16 in the Jerome Schottenstein Center should notify their college dean’s office by March 7. On commencement day, faculty registered to participate in the processional should assemble by 1:45 p.m. in cap and gown in the west concourse of the Schottenstein Center between Sections 110/110 and 111/111, directly across from the southwest lobby. The ceremony begins at 2 p.m. For more information, contact Commencement and Special Events at 292-9051.

EHE dean search committee seeks feedback
The College of Education and Human Ecology Dean Search Committee, being led by Dean John Roberts, is soliciting feedback from faculty, staff and students in an effort to understand the diversity of perspectives that need to be considered during its search. Dean of pharmacy wins research award
Robert Brueggemeier, professor and dean of the College of Pharmacy, has been selected as the recipient of the American Pharmacists Association’s Tyler Prize for Stimulation of Research Award.

The award recognizes and encourages outstanding stimulation of research in peers, students, fellows, residents and others via publications, directing research or mentoring in any discipline of the pharmaceutical sciences. Brueggemeier has mentored 27 graduate students and 10 postdoctoral fellows.

He will be presented with the award during the APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition March 14-17 in San Diego, Calif.

OSU Extension educator receives USDA-CSREES National Water award
Jerry Iles, OSU Extension educator for watershed management, along with team members Lois Wolfson (Michigan State University), Barb Liukkonen (University of Minnesota) and Kris Stepenuck (University of Wisconsin), has received the 2008 Water Resources Team Award – Outstanding Extension Program. Presented recently at the USDA – Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service National Water Conference in Sparks, Nev., the award recognizes the team’s program, Building Capacity of Citizens Monitoring Bacteria. The USDA-CSREES provided grant funding of $294,000 for the project, which trained and researched the ability of volunteers to collect and interpret water quality data in six midwestern states.

Funding available from the Climate, Water and Carbon program
The Climate, Water and Carbon program, a Targeted Investment in Excellence funded by Academic Affairs (oaa.osu.edu/TIE2.php), is announcing funding opportunities for helping the CWC meet its goals. Guidelines on how to propose new core projects and new seed grant documents are available at bprc.osu.edu/dev/cwc/projects. The CWC is hosting a campuswide meeting on March 10 to discuss the funding opportunities. For more information, contact Doug Alsdorf at alsdorf.1@osu.edu.

Landmark Theatres assumes management of South Campus’ Gateway Theater
Landmark Theatres, which operates 57 theaters in 23 markets, took over management of the seven-screen Gateway Theater, owned by Ohio State’s Campus Partners. The management deal, which began March 1, also includes operating the adjacent conference and meeting facilities, also known as The Event Place, which opened last May.

Landmark was tabbed for its ability to provide moviegoers with a unique experience and for its ability to effectively expand similar facilities’ roles in hosting special events and meetings. Since opening its Los Angeles theater last June, Landmark booked more than 300 events in that facility.

College of Public Health grad students win national Case Competition
A team of three graduate students from the College of Public Health beat 20 other college teams to take top honors at the national Case Competition last month in Birmingham, Ala. Julie Anstine, Kyle Dorsey and Nick Schmidt won $3,000 each, beating out competitors from Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, Northwestern University and others.

The Case Competition, sponsored by the UAB Health System, had teams made up of two or three students which received a case study scenario in January. They were asked to prepare a comprehensive analysis and develop a set of practical recommendations in the areas of leadership, staffing issues, operational efficiency, design challenges, finance and marketing.

The case study for 2008 related to the improvement of a hospital’s emergency department.

Credit Union of Ohio increases volunteer donations of time, money
The Credit Union of Ohio, which serves state employees as well as Ohio State faculty, staff and students, announced it had 1,154 volunteer contributions of time, money or materials in 2007. The support went to a variety of organizations, with chidren’s charities being the largest recipients.

Credit Union volunteers participated in community parades, including the OSU Homecoming parade, and collected more than $550 in donations for the Adopt-A-Family program. The union made a $5,000 donation, collected from staff and members, to Adventures for Wish Kids. Overall, Credit Union volunteers added 130 hours over 2006, and the organization has vowed to increase its totals again in 2008.
