Committee set to explore semester conversion Recently, Faculty Council voted unanimously to appoint an ad hoc committee to explore Ohio State’s shifting to semesters. The committee will present a resolution to the University Senate by the end of winter quarter 2009.

Ohio State professor honored with prestigious award in Japan Bradley Richardson, professor emeritus in the department of political science, has been honored with the Order of the Rising Sun, the second most prestigious national decoration awarded by the Japanese government. He is one of 4,028 individuals selected from various fields, and one of 75 foreigners from 40 countries recognized with the autumn 2008 decorations. The Japanese government bestows these awards to those who have contributed greatly to the nation and the public in politics, business, culture and the arts.
OSU community encouraged to participate in sustainability survey OSU faculty, staff and students are asked to help with a research effort to learn about and attitudes related to sustainability efforts here. The survey should take about 15 minutes and all responses will be kept confidential. Survey results will be used for academic research and practice recommendations. Whittington gains national teaching recognition Susie Whittington, associate professor in the Department of Human and Community Resource Development, was honored Nov. 10 with the USDA Excellence in Teaching Award, announced at the annual meeting of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges (nasulgc.org). The honor is the highest teaching award among colleges of agriculture and related sciences nationwide.
OSU Extension ID system for animal-drawn vehicles becomes standard After a decade of advocacy and education, OSU Extension recommendations for lighting and marking animal-drawn equipment have been standardized, paving the way for national and international adoption of safety procedures on vehicles, such as Amish buggies, horse-drawn farm wagons and urban carriages.
The standard, officially adopted by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, outlines the practices and procedures for establishing a unique identification system for slow-moving, animal-drawn vehicles on public roadways or highways. According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety, more than 1,400 crashes between animal-drawn buggies and motor vehicles have occurred since 1998.
OSU buildings draw awards for distinction The Columbus chapter of the American Institute of Architects gave the Knowlton School of Architecture’s 165,000-square-foot builiding a 2008 Honor Award, one of three Ohio buildings to earn the recognition, on Nov. 13. WSA Studio of Columbus was the architect of record for the building, which was designed by Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects of Atlanta, Ga. Five Merit Awards also were handed out; one going to OSU’s Recreation and Physical Activity Center, from the five-judge panel.
