Charity drive raises $1 million

For the second year in a row, Ohio State’s Community Charitable Drive has catapulted Ohio State’s faculty and staff into the $1 million club.

The Columbus campus community raised $1,015,500 for central Ohio health and human services charities through the 2004 Bucks for Charity drive.

“There is no question that Ohio State is a generous place,” said Archie Griffin, co-chair of the drive and president/CEO of the Ohio State Alumni Association, at a Jan. 20 finale celebration. “This is the seventh year that we have exceeded our goal.”

This year’s drive officially began Oct. 1 and continued through Dec. 10. However, donations, including for the recent South Asia tsunami, continued to come in throughout January.

Eleven federations of charities were the designated recipients of funds: the Black United Fund of Ohio; Community Health Charities of Ohio; Community Shares of Mid Ohio; Earth Share of Ohio; The United Negro College Fund/UNCF; and United Way of Central Ohio, Delaware, Fairfield, Licking, Pickaway and Union counties. Each group serves as an umbrella organization for numerous independent member agencies. Donors also can contribute to qualified 501(c)(3) health and human service agencies in central Ohio.

“With a big sigh of relief, a deep breath, I am able to say that we finally made it,” said Ned Cullom, program manager for the Office of Human Resources. “I think it has been remarkable that over two-thirds of the 34 campaign units achieved or exceeded their goal.”
More than 3,700 faculty, staff, students and retirees participated in 2004. In 2003, $1 million was raised, up from nearly $842,000 in 2002, $793,000 in 2001 and $759,000 in 2000. Donations have increased steadily since 1998.

The event also included recognition of Cullom, who has overseen the university’s drive for a decade. “This is Ned’s last Community Charitable Drive because he has decided to retire,” said Barbara Snyder, executive vice president and provost. “Ned, we will miss the incredible work you have done.”
