Session to explore women’s work issues

Judy Fountain, assistant vice provost for Women’s Policy Initiatives and director, of The Women’s Place; Shari Mickey-Boggs, program director - work/life; and Kathryn M. Plank, associate director of FTAD, will present “Women in Higher Education: Balancing Work and Life” from 3-4:30 p.m. Feb. 24 in 150 Younkin Success Center.

Participants will explore the challenges women in academia face in balancing work/life issues, learn about resources available at the university and discuss possible strategies for creating balance.

Gallagher to give ergonomics lecture

Sean Gallagher, research physiologist, will present “The Influence of Torso Flexion on Fatigue Failure of Lumbosacral Motion Segments,” part of the Institute for Ergonomics Guest Lecture Series, from 1-2 p.m. Feb. 20 in 210E Baker Systems.

Ninth Avenue traffic patterns changing

The first phase of work on the realignment of Ninth Avenue and the new plaza area has begun. The sidewalk along the south side of Ninth Avenue between Perry Street and Belmont Avenue is closed. Pedestrians must use the north sidewalk. The CABS stop on Ninth Avenue has temporarily relocated east of the Ninth Avenue Garage. Traffic on Ninth Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction during the project.

Braun opens Women’s History Month

Former presidential candidate and ambassador Carol Moseley Braun will be the closing speaker for United Black World Month and opening speaker for Women’s History Month from 7-10 p.m. March 3 in the Ohio Union Ballrooms.

Braun also has served as a U.S. senator, state representative and assistant U.S. attorney. Since 2001, she has taught law and political science at Morris Brown College and DePaul University. Braun also heads a business law practice and is a business consultant in Chicago.

WOSU seeks volunteers for television fundraiser

The WOSU Stations are seeking individual and group volunteers to take phone pledges during the upcoming television fundraiser to air March 6-23. WOSU fundraisers are held at the WOSU Stations, 2400 Olentangy River Road.

Training is provided and volunteer shifts are available weekday evenings and weekends.

Kamat to present at Mershon Center

Sangeeta Kamat, University of Massachusetts, Amherst will deliver “The Privatization of Public Interest: Theorizing NGOs in the Neoliberal Era” at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 19 in 122 Mershon Center. Task force hosts Body Image Bazaar

The Body Image Task Force will host the annual Body Image Bazaar from10 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 25 in Larkins Hall. Set to coincide with National Eating Disorders Week, the event is open to anyone. Features include interactive exhibits, video clips on healthy body image issues and photos of cross-cultural body modifications.

IP video technology workshop is March 2

OSU CARES is sponsoring the Teaching with IP (Internet Protocol) Videoconferencing Technology faculty workshop at noon March 2 in 244 Kottman Hall and other distant locations. The workshop will introduce instructors to IP video technology, as well as the best teaching practices for videoconferencing and troubleshooting techniques.

Interdisciplinary seminar series continues

Noel Cressie, professor of statistics and director of the Program in Spatial Statistics and Environmental Sciences, and Ken Jezek of the Byrd Polar Research Center, continue to host the winter quarter interdisciplinary seminar series for remote-sensing data.
The seminars will be held from noon-1:30 p.m. Wednesdays in 212 Cockins Hall; refreshments will be available for the first half hour.
• On Feb. 25, Dorota Brzezinska, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science, will present “Global Positioning Systems (GPS) in Antarctica.”
• On March 3, Joel Johnson, Department of Electrical Engineering, will present “Microwave-remote Sensing Research at the ElectroScience Laboratory.”

Multicultural scholar program offered

The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences is unveiling a new program, the Visiting Faculty Multicultural Scholar.

The first guest scholar, Marybeth Lima, associate professor at Louisiana State University Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, will be leading a series of discussions at various locations the week of Feb. 23.

American Indian conference is Feb. 27-29

“Paving the Way for the 7th Generation: Preserving Our Culture in the Face of Colonialism,” an American Indian Council student conference and pow-wow, will be held Feb. 27-29. The conference begins at 9 a.m. Feb. 27 in 100 Independence Hall, while the pow-wow begins at 10 a.m. Feb. 28 in the French Field House. Admission is free.

Actress Lisa Barnett will present a one-woman play titled, Hand to Mouth — One Woman’s Struggle With and Recovery From Bulimia, at 7 p.m. Feb. 26 in

Nena Couch, curator of the Jerome Lawrence and Robert E.
