onCampus--Ohio State's faculty/staff news

Vol. 38, No. 18

1-3-2006

onCampus celebrates 35 years

For 35 years, onCampus has served the Ohio State community. Since the first issue debuted on April 19, 1971, onCampus has covered the university's progress, celebrated its accomplishments and recognized and documented the activities and scholarship of faculty, staff and administrators.

In its early days, the faculty and staff newspaper averaged four pages per issue. Now, the biweekly publication averages 24 pages and includes news and feature stories, a comprehensive calendar of university events and extensive listings of faculty and staff publications, presentations and media attention. Paid advertisements also have been a part of the newspaper since 1992, and today cover a significant portion of our production costs, including the use of color.

The cover of the Jan. 5 issue shows a sampling of the newspaper's front page over the years. If we could have shown you all of our covers, a wide and expansive portrait of Ohio State would have emerged: the tenures of six university presidents; the research triumphs of talented faculty; the construction of numerous campus buildings; the budget strains of a state-funded university; the visits of sitting and former U.S. presidents; the ins-and-outs of faculty, staff and administrators doing the jobs they love; and the continual progress Ohio State has made in becoming a premier, world-class academic institution.

As the news has changed, so has the look of onCampus. The newspaper has undergone several major redesigns, most recently in 2001. Today we're introducing a more hip look while still maintaining our identity as a newspaper. For starters, our masthead, at the top of the cover page, has changed - albeit only slightly - by downplaying the once-capitalized "CAMPUS" and shifting our logo (once again, if you'll note its evolution over the years) flush left. Throughout the newspaper, column headers, headlines and accent text have been updated with a more modern sanserif font, and our table of contents, previously on page two, has been abridged and moved to the cover in the hopes that our inner content will further pique your interest. We also have improved a few of our standing columns: We've combined our Calendar and Memos features into a two-page spread that will provide upcoming activities and mini-event capsules in one easy-to-read section. And in an effort to better highlight the research conducted at the university, the Discoveries page also has expanded to two pages. We've renamed and moved the former Research Briefs column to the facing page and will now highlight the research of two faculty instead of one.

Although the paper has grown by 600 percent since its early days, the size of the onCampus staff has remained virtually the same. The paper continues to be produced by Editor Joni Bentz Seal, Managing Editor Susan Wittstock Dalzell, Associate Editor Julia Harris and Advertising Manager Bill Estep, with the help of editorial intern Ali Hickey and advertising intern David Suhay. The staff is part of the Internal Communications unit of the Office of University Relations.

We look forward to what 2006 has in store for the university and plan to continue the tradition of providing faculty, staff - and now graduate associates - with lively and timely information that enhances their relationship with Ohio State. Keeping the community connected is what onCampus is all about.
