Ag safety conference registration March 10
The Great Lakes Center for Agricultural Safety and Health and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are sponsoring the conference “Improving Agricultural and Practical Safety Programs Through Evaluation: Rigorous and Practical Strategies” on March 15-16. The conference will begin with dinner at 6 p.m. March 15 and continue through 3:30 p.m. March 16 at the University Plaza Hotel and Conference Center, 3110 Olentangy River Road.

OCDE Convergence Conference March 8-9
The Ohio Commons for Digital Education 2004 — The Convergence of Libraries, Learning and Technology Conference, will be held March 8-9 at the Columbus Hilton at Easton Town Center. OCDE is a new shared resources and services environment created by the Ohio Learning Network (OLN), OhioLINK, the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) and OARnet. OCDE’s goal is to support instruction, libraries, research applications, and computational analysis and networking.
Howard Rheingold is the keynote speaker and the conference includes vendor exhibits and technology demonstrations at Innovation Island. Innovation Island will showcase the most innovative applications regarding program models, partnerships, technology innovations and other grant-funded projects throughout Ohio.

Session to explore women’s work issues
Judy Fountain, assistant vice provost for Women’s Policy Initiatives and director of The Women’s Place; Shari Mickey-Boggs, director of work/life; and Kathryn M. Plank, associate director of faculty and TA development, will present “Women in Higher Education: Balancing Work and Life” from 3-4:30 p.m. March 9 in 150 Younkin Success Center.
Participants will explore the challenges women in academia face in balancing work/life issues, learn about resources available at the university and discuss possible strategies for creating balance.

Faculty Awards Ceremony is March 30
President Karen Holbrook and Interim Provost Barbara Snyder will recognize Ohio State’s most distinguished faculty at the annual Faculty Awards Ceremony at 4 p.m. March 30 in Weigel Hall Auditorium. They will present the 2004 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Faculty Award for Distinguished University Service and the Distinguished Scholar Award to 19 faculty. The ceremony is open to the public, and will be followed by a reception in the second-floor lobby. Check the April 8 issue of onCampus and www.osu.edu — on March 30 — for the complete list of awardees.

Nominations sought for advising award
The Academic Advising Association of Ohio State (ACADAOS), the professional organization for academic advisers and advising, is seeking nominations for the 2004 Outstanding Advisor Award. The award goes to those persons most likely to serve as a positive model for all academic advisers at Ohio State.
The awards will be presented at the ACADAOS Awards luncheon in May. The nomination deadline is April 23.

Development grants available for women
Professional Development and Women of Color Advancement Grants are available for women faculty and staff continuously employed by Ohio State for at least one year, and students (graduate 3.0 GPA, undergraduate 2.5 GPA). Grants may be used for research, supplies, dependent-care or travel.
Applications are due by March 11. Selection criteria/requirements and application forms can be found on the Critical Difference for Women Web site at http://criticaldifference.osu.edu/.

Girves, Colbert to address Lunch Bunch
Catherine Girves, community leader, and Susan Colbert, OSU Extension Agent in the University District, will discuss their efforts to partner with community organizations on new initiatives in the district at the March 8 meeting of the University District Lunch Bunch, from noon-1:30 p.m. at Campus Partners, 1824 N. High St. Parking is available across the street in the Ohio Union Garage.

Newark chorus set to perform March 12
The Newark Campus University Chorus will present “Themes of Childhood” at 8 pm. March 12 in the LeFevre Art Gallery. Audience members will have the opportunity to view Betty LaDuke’s Children of the World exhibit, currently featured in the gallery, and hear the music of Stephen Foster, Randall Thompson, James Mulholland, Stuart McIntosh, and selections from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.
Newark Campus University Chorus members are students from Ohio State Newark and Central Ohio Technical College and members of the surrounding community.

Community service project grants available
Grants of up to $8,000 are available for the development of teams of faculty, students and community partners who plan and implement projects that address community goals in areas such as health, community safety, youth, housing and education.
Teams should include faculty from at least two departments, at least two courses with significant service-learning components and are expected to be active for at least a full academic year. A summer institute for funded teams will support planning and initial implementation phases of projects.

Nisbet to present biotechnology lecture
Matthew Nisbet, professor of journalism and communication, will discuss “Media Coverage and the Public Understanding of Biotechnology,” with an introduction by President Karen Holbrook at the College of Biological Sciences 2004 Dean’s Lecture from 2-4 p.m. March 5 in 170 Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute. A question and answer session will follow the lecture.

Winter commencement marchers wanted
All faculty members planning to march in the academic processional at winter commencement on March 21 in the Jerome Schottenstein Center should notify their college dean’s office by March 12. On commencement day, faculty registered to participate in the processional should assemble by 2:45 p.m. in cap and gown in the west concourse of the Schottenstein Center directly across from the southwest lobby.

OSU hosts outreach conference April 30
“Ohio State: The 21st Century Model for Outreach and Engagement,” a universitywide outreach conference will be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. April 30 in the Ohio Union East Ballroom.

Digital Union involved in Internet2 event
OSU is among those universities providing a local venue for faculty and staff to present and participate in National Internet2 Day on March 18. National speakers will be Webcast throughout the day, with several presentations originating from the Digital Union, located on the third floor of the Science and Engineering Library. Bob Dixon, chief research engineer for the Office of the CIO and for OARnet, and Catherine Gynn, TELR coordinator, are organizing the event.
Led by more than 200 U.S. universities working with industry and government, Internet2 develops and deploys advanced network applications and technologies for research and higher education.

Luncheon, fashion report set for March 14
OSU’s Historic Costume Collection presents “Style: Today and Yesterday,” a luncheon and video fashion report, at 1 p.m. March 14 in the Geraldine Schottenstein Wing of Campbell Hall. The presentation will include a report on the latest trends in the spring collections from New York City. The gallery with the College of Human Ecology’s latest exhibition, Capital Fashion, Columbus 1851-1965, will be open for viewing following the program.

Entries sought for film, video showcase
The ninth annual Ohio Short Film and Video Showcase is accepting entries through March 26. Pieces must be independently produced, no longer than 20 minutes and produced in Ohio within the last 18 months. Entries must be submitted on 1/2-inch VHS videotape or DVD. Only one entry per person.
The showcase will be held at 7 p.m. May 8 in the Wexner Film/Video Theater.

Community service award nominees sought
Nominations are currently being accepted for Awards for Excellence in Community Service and Scholarship 2004. The awards are sponsored by the Service-Learning Initiative, Service-Learning Scholars Roundtable and Project Community in collaboration with the John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy, the Office of Undergraduate Studies and University Outreach and Engagement.

Amernet program includes Mexican flavor
The Amernet String Quartet will perform at 2 p.m. March 7 in the auditorium of the Columbus Museum of Art, 480 E. Broad St. The concert is part of the Jefferson Academy of Music Sunday afternoon chamber music series, and will include a work commissioned by the quartet from Emmanuel Arias y Luna, a prominent Mexican composer.
Tickets cost $16 and $14 for students, seniors and museum members, and includes a tour of museum exhibits at 1:15 p.m.
