The John Glenn Institute's Management Advancement for the Public Service program will hold a seminar titled "Key Fundamentals of Management" from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
Jan. 10-11 at the Fawcett Center. Participants will get an overview of management systems and techniques for both operational activities and individual employees. Topics covered will include the role of the manager, communications, motivation and employee performance review and discipline. Also included is a public sector simulation that will take participants through the stages of developing teamwork.

Symposium focuses on dispute resolution

The Moritz College of Law will host a symposium from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
Jan. 26 in Drinko Hall's Saxbe Auditorium. "Listening to the World: New Ideas for Resolving Identity-Based Conflict" will bring together interdisciplinary scholars from around the world to generate new ideas for building United States institutions that are responsive to race, ethnicity, religious and class conflict. The symposium is sponsored by the Ohio State Journal on Dispute Resolution.

honors MLK
Bryan Barrows, professor of speech communications at North Harris College, will present his one-man, documentary-style drama "Who Was Martin Luther King?" from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Martha W. Lecture
Jan. 12, Celebration honors Martin Luther King Jr.
Ohio State will present the 34th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at 7 p.m. Jan. 12 in the Ohio Union Ballrooms. Johnnetta B. Cole, 14th president of Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, N.C., will speak on "Life to Legacy: Building the Beloved Community." Cole's published works, speeches and community service address issues of race, gender, equality, achievement and human rights. The African American Voices Gospel Choir also will perform. Ohio State is presenting the event in collaboration with the city of Columbus, Columbus State Community College, the King Arts Complex and Radio One.

Jan. 22- March 5, Active Aging classes now offered
The Department of Recreational Sports offers Active Aging classes designed to give recreation and sport opportunities to those who are young at heart, but need fitness levels designed for an aging body. Winter quarter classes in weight training, ballroom dance, tennis, swimming, yoga and racquetball are on the docket. Classes begin the week of Jan. 22 and run through the week of March 5 and are open to the general public.

Jan. 19, Men's a capella ensemble sings in Marion
Voice Male, a men's a capella vocal ensemble composed of Ohio State students, staff and alumni, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 19 in Morrill Hall Auditorium at Ohio State Marion. The group combines four-part harmony with humor as they sing songs from the 1950s through the 1990s, as well as songs with spiritual and collegiate significance. Voice Male formed in August 2005 and has performed at tailgate parties and other university functions. This Five Nights on Campus series extra is the group's first full-length concert. Jan. 13, GA teaching award nominations sought
The Graduate School is requesting faculty, staff and undergraduate and graduate students to nominate outstanding Graduate Teaching Associates for the Graduate Associate Teaching Award. The GATA award is the university's highest recognition of the exceptional teaching provided by graduate students at Ohio State. Winners will receive $1,500 and a plaque of recognition at the Graduate School Spring Awards Reception. The nomination deadline is Jan. 13. For more information, call

July 20, Kiplinger program seeks applicants
The Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism, a mid-career master's degree program for professional journalists, is accepting applications through July 20 for 2007 fellows. Kiplinger fellows spend two academic quarters attending seminars and interacting with top journalists, public policy leaders and other experts from around the country.

Ongoing, TELR offers professional development grants
Technology Enhanced Learning and Research is offering professional development grants to promote new technology skills, and money is still available for qualified applicants. The grants provide up to $1,000 in matching funds for faculty and technology support staff who want to enhance teaching and learning using technology or augment technological expertise in a job-related area. Ongoing, The Kirwan Years is now available
The Kirwan Years, a hardcover book chronicling the tenure of former Ohio State President William "Brit" Kirwan, is now available through the OSU Press University of Chicago Distribution Center. The book recounts the Academic Plan creation, acceptance and initial implementation, along with many major university accomplishments from mid-1998 through mid-2002. The John Glenn Institute's Management Advancement for the Public Service will hold a workshop, "The High-Performance Organization Part IV: Implementing Your Strategy," from

The workshop will focus on the how-to of strategy implementation and will teach hands-on tools for effectively getting things done within the strategic direction of an organization. Playwright, performer and activist Eve Ensler will present her newest one-woman show, The Good Body, at 8 p.m. Jan. 10-14, 2 p.m. Jan. 14-15 and 7 p.m. Jan. 15 in the Drake Center's Thurber Theatre. She will be available for talk backs after the Jan. 10 and 12 performances. Ensler, the creator of The Vagina Monologues, focused on the female form for this play, discussing why women of all backgrounds feel compelled to change the way they look in order to fit in, be accepted and be "good." In The Good Body, Ensler frames the stories with tales from her own journey. Recommended for mature audiences.
