Holbrook receives YWCA women's award
President Karen Holbrook is one of six recipients of the 2006 YWCA Women of Achievement Award, which honors commitment to the YWCA's vision of the empowerment of women, the elimination of racism, service to the community and mentoring other women. The award winners were selected by a panel of community leaders and will join nearly 200 previous inductees at a luncheon April 5 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

Deans reappointed
Four deans at Ohio State have been reappointed to five-year terms, effective July 1, 2006-June 30, 2011: Elizabeth Lenz, dean of the College of Nursing; Nancy Rogers, dean of the Moritz College of Law; Joseph Alutto, dean of the Fisher College of Business; and Bobby Moser, dean of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.

Taft appoints three to OSU Board of Trustees
Gov. Bob Taft has announced three appointments to Ohio State's Board of Trustees to fill positions created by House Bill 66, which calls for the addition of six members to the board of nine voting trustees and also changed the law to allow former trustees to return to the board. The new appointments are Leslie H. Wexner, Limited Brands founder; George Gilbert Cloyd, chief technology officer at Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati; and John Doyle Ong, a former chairman and chief executive of BF Goodrich Co. and U.S. ambassador to Norway.

Battelle commits $1.6 million to WOSU
Battelle has committed $1.6 million to support WOSU's new digital media center at Columbus' Center of Science and Industry. It is the largest gift ever received by WOSU and will be used for construction of the center and for the creation of the Battelle Endowment for the WOSU Digital Media Center, which will provide for the center's long-term needs.

Ohio Sea Grant to join NSF center
Ohio Sea Grant and OSU's School of Environment and Natural Resources are partners in the newly funded National Science Foundation Center for Ocean Science Education Excellence. The COSEE Great Lakes will receive nearly $2.5 million for a five-year program for coordinated research, education and outreach initiatives connecting Great Lakes topics and issues with counterpart concepts in the science of the world ocean. The regional center is funded through the Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystems Research at the University of Michigan, and directed through the Ohio office.

Ohio State names leader for technology transfer
Jean Schelhorn has been named associate vice president for technology transfer and commercialization efforts at Ohio State. Beginning Feb. 15, Schelhorn will oversee university efforts to identify, protect and commercialize intellectual property developed by faculty, students and staff. She will serve as primary spokesperson on technology transfer and will build collaborations with public and private entities to commercialize intellectual property and foster economic growth. Currently, Schelhorn is vice president for intellectual property strategy and development at Battelle. She is an accomplished inventor with 11 awarded and eight pending U.S. patents, accompanied by roughly 30 associated international patents.

Armstrong Foundation helps fund study
The Lance Armstrong Foundation has awarded a $247,000 grant to researchers at Ohio State to help fund a study to test a program to prevent lymphedema in women who have been treated for breast cancer. The Comprehensive Cancer Center - Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute will be the coordinating center and one of 28 institutions enrolling more than 560 women nationwide in the Lymphedema and Education Awareness Program.

Rogers named to AALS presidency
Nancy Rogers, dean of the Moritz College of Law and the Michael E. Moritz Chair in Alternative Dispute Resolution, was named president-elect of the Association of American Law Schools Jan. 6 during its annual meeting. The AALS is the learned society of legal scholars and comprises more than 6,000 law faculty from 168 member schools. Rogers is the fifth president of the AALS from Ohio State and will succeed Judith Areen, former dean of Georgetown Law School, as president in January 2007.
