Jan. 26, As part of the sixth annual President and Provost's Diversity Lecture and Cultural Arts Series, I. King Jordan will speak at 4 p.m. Jan. 26 in the Ohio Union Conference Theatre. Jordan is the first deaf president of Gallaudet University, the only university in the world designed specifically for the deaf and hearing impaired. Jordan's leadership has heightened public awareness of the educational contributions Gallaudet makes to the nation and the world. He serves as an international spokesman for deaf and hard of hearing people, as well as an advocate for all persons with disabilities. The lecture is free and open to the public. Jan. 31, "The Many Faces of Us" will be the topic for a speaker and student discussion panel from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 31 in 250 Knowlton Hall. Guest speaker Rick Kittles, associate professor of molecular virology, immunology and medical genetics, is a specialist in the area of human population genetics. A student discussion panel will explore the influence of identity development on self perceptions and interactions with others, inside and outside of a community. The event is sponsored by the African American Male Resource Center, the Office of Minority Affairs and the Multicultural Center. Feb. 1, Kevin Boyle, professor of history and winner of the 2004 National Book Award for nonfiction, will speak and read from Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights, and Murder in the Jazz Age at 7 p.m. Feb. 1 in 64 Hopewell Hall at Ohio State Newark. The talk is free and open to the public. Refreshments and a book signing will follow. Arc of Justice is the historical account of black doctor Ossian Sweet and his wife, who moved into a white Detroit neighborhood in 1925. Mob violence, a murder and a court case involving the NAACP and legendary attorney Clarence Darrow highlighted the right of blacks to protect their property and helped spark the modern struggle for civil rights. Nominations, Awards and Grants
Feb. 17, The University Staff Advisory Committee is now accepting membership applications for 2006-09 terms. Formed in 1986, USAC is an advisory body to the university president. USAC's mission is to maintain an active and participatory line of communication with the university community and to provide a forum through which staff can raise, discuss and make recommendations on nonacademic issues and activities. USAC is comprised of 30 nonbargaining unit classified civil service, unclassified administrative and professional and senior administrative and professional staff members. USAC members are appointed by the university's president to three-year terms. Each year, 10 members rotate off the committee with 10 new members being appointed. March 3, The Colleges of the Arts and Sciences are seeking Freshman Seminars proposals for 2006-07. Those received before March 3 will have first consideration. In 2003, President Karen Holbrook fostered the OSU Freshman Seminar Program to provide unique learning experiences for first-year students. In small, discussion-based seminars, distinguished faculty introduce first-year students to topical and cutting-edge research areas from a wide variety of disciplines. March 31, The Ohio State University Alumni Association announces a call for nominations for the 2006 Alumni Association Awards Program. Of Note
A new WOSU.TV series, Columbus on the Record, an in-depth analysis of issues and stories affecting Columbus and the central Ohio area, airs Fridays at 9:30 p.m. Hosted by Mike Thompson, WOSU's news and public affairs director, the program features well-respected journalists and veteran political observers offering insight and analysis of the top stories of the week, as well as panelists from outside the mainstream, including bloggers and editors of minority publications.

Jan. 25, A workshop on the responsible conduct of research is scheduled for Jan. 25 in H1213 Ross Conference Center, Ross Heart Hospital.
