March 16, In addition to soliciting nominations for faculty women for the summer Bryn Mawr Institute, The Women's Place also is seeking nominations for women staff members. Each year, Ohio State sends one woman faculty to this four-week summer residential leadership training program, and this year the university also will send one staff member. The Office of the President and The Women's Place will fund two-thirds of the cost, and the staff member's unit is being asked to fund the remaining third (about $2,400). A woman staff member who has demonstrated potential for a career in a leadership role will be chosen. Applicants should submit a letter of application and a letter of support from their dean or vice president directly to Deb Ballam, director of The Women's Place, 400 Stillman Hall by March 16. For more information, contact Ballam at ballam.1@osu.edu or visit www.brynmawr.edu/summer
institute.

Sciences and chair of AWISCO Awards Committee, 484 W. 12th Ave., Columbus 43210. For details, call 292-1627 or e-mail herbers.4@osu.edu.
April 7, the Office of International Affairs is awarding grants of up to $5,000 to support interdisciplinary lectures, seminar series or conferences on international themes. These activities may focus on one particular geographical area, or they may involve systematic cross-regional perspectives on themes of global relevance. Proposals are invited from faculty, interdisciplinary and area study centers and academic units. Eligibility is contingent upon the commitment of partial counterpart funds from other sources. Grant application forms are available at http://oia.osu.edu/grants.html. The deadline is April 7.
April 7, the Office of International Affairs is soliciting applications from faculty who are proposing to: collaborate with foreign scholars in preparing a research grant proposal; participate in a faculty-exchange program; develop agreements linking OSU to major foreign institutions; or complete a manuscript jointly authored with a foreign-based scholar. Typical grants range from $1,500 to $2,000, with a maximum ceiling of $3,000. With the exception of faculty proposing to participate in an OSU faculty-exchange program, applicants are required to secure counterpart funds from OSU or external funding agencies.

Of Note ...
March 17 and 31, the medical plan premium that is normally deducted from monthly and bi-weekly pay will be suspended for the last two pay periods in March, giving eligible faculty and staff a "premium holiday." The premium holiday will be applied to the March 17 and March 31 pay of employees paid bi-weekly and the March 31 pay for employees paid monthly, meaning no medical deduction will be shown on online/printed pay stubs.
Because claims and administrative costs paid out of the medical plan have not exceeded the premiums collected, a surplus of funds in excess of what is estimated to cover such costs is likely. Eligible faculty and staff include those who: are enrolled in one of the university-sponsored medical plans; hold a regular or term appointment; and are on active pay status on the first day of the pay period in which the holiday will occur.
For more information, view http://hr.osu.edu/Benefits/premiumholidayfaq.pdf, e-mail service@hr.osu.edu or call 292-1050 or (800) 678-6010.
March-April, 12th Avenue is closed in front of the Biomedical Research Tower construction site until the beginning of April to construct a walkway bridge that will connect the BRT to the Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute. When the street reopens in April, it will be one-way westbound until mid-May. For details, visit http://tp.osu.edu/alerts/12thavenueclosure.shtml.
