3-15-2006 News briefs 3/16/06Kamoun leads $6.7 million projects to sequence genome of major crop killers Ohio State plant pathologist Sophien Kamoun likes to know his enemies. And as the key player in two recently funded, $6.7 million projects aimed at sequencing the genome of two devastating crop killers, he will get to know all 20,000 genes of them. A scientist with the university's Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster, Kamoun is the only investigator who is part of both research teams sequencing the genome of Phytophthora infestans and Phytophthora capsici - fungus-like oomycetes that cause serious diseases in popular vegetables such as potatoes, tomatoes and peppers, and which have the potential to threaten food security in many developing countries.
Holbrook receives honorary degree during trip to India Punjab Agricultural University conferred an honorary Doctor of Science degree on Karen Holbrook at a special convocation March 8 in Ludhiana, India, during the Ohio State president's visit to the country last week. Retired Gen. S.F. Rodrigues, the governor of Punjab and chancellor of the university, presented the degree to Holbrook, who was chosen for the honor for her outstanding contributions to science and reviving the second phase of partnership between the PAU and OSU.
University launches anonymous reporting line The university has launched the Anonymous Reporting Line Service, hosted by EthicsPoint, Inc, which will allow faculty, staff and students to remain anonymous in reporting suspected misconduct in the categories of Athletics, Financial, Health Care, Human Resources and Research. The Anonymous Reporting Line does not replace or supersede existing reporting methods on campus, and employees are encouraged to continue bringing concerns to their supervisor or other campus entities as appropriate. The reporting line does not support reporting of academic or student conduct matters, such as plagiarism, cheating or other actions covered by the Code of Student Conduct and the University Rules. Academic matters involving faculty and/or students should be reported to the Office of Academic Affairs at 292-5881. Non-academic student conduct matters should be reported to the Office of Student Affairs, Student Judicial Affairs at 292-0748.
A new Whistleblower Policy (Policy 1.40) was launched March 1 and applies to university faculty, staff, student employees, students and volunteers. The policy encourages individuals to report alleged wrongful conduct in good faith; protects individuals who engage in good faith disclosure of alleged wrongful conduct from retaliation; identifies where reports of wrongful conduct should be made; and states that false allegations will be subject to corrective action. All university community members should become familiar with the policy, which can be found online on the Office of Human Resources' policy Web site at http://hr.osu.edu/policy/policyhome.htm.
