3-30-2006 Ohio State students win prestigious scholarshipsOhio State students have recently been recognized with two of the most competitive national scholarships for undergraduates - the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and the Harry S. Truman Scholarship. Yoonhee Ha, a member of the Honors Collegium, a finance and biology major, and the undergraduate representative on Ohio State's Board of Trustees, has been awarded a scholarship from the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation for the 2006-07 academic year (http://www.truman.gov/). The scholarship provides up to $30,000 in funding to college juniors hoping to pursue graduate degrees in public service fields, and the Truman Foundation provides leadership training, special internship opportunities within the federal government, and the chance to fellowship with other students committed to improving society through public service. Additionally, David Knapp, a junior double majoring in economics and political science, was named a Truman District Finalist, which is an honor in itself. Brian Kiel, a junior geological sciences major, and Michael Chmutov, a junior physics and mathematics major, have been awarded the 2006-07 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, one of the most prestigious scholarships in the country for undergraduates in mathematics, science and engineering. Kiel's research proposal was titled "Capability of SRTM DEM Data to Measure Water Elevations in Ohio and the Amazon," while Chmutov's research, "Computers of the Future," outlines his research in quantum computation theory. Receiving honorable mention in the scholarship competition were Gregory Kestin, a sophomore physics and mathematics major, and Ian Jones, a junior microbiology and chemistry major. The one- and two-year scholarships cover tuition and other costs up to $7,500 per year. Information on the Goldwater can be found at http://www.act.org/goldwater/
