History comes to life at Marion campus through Chautauqua 2004

Marion is one of five cities chosen statewide for Ohio Chautauqua 2004, a traveling tent show that presents history in the compelling form of first person historical characterizations.

Presented by the Ohio Humanities Council, this series of free community performances and workshops will take place the first week of summer 2004 for adults and children in Marion and surrounding communities. Performances will be hosted at the Marion campus June 23-27. Prior to each presentation, local talent will entertain those in attendance.

Each evening, trained scholars/performers from across the country assume the costume and character of historical figures as they present exciting living history performances beneath an old-fashioned Chautauqua tent. The theme for Ohio Chautauqua 2004 is “The Roaring Twenties.” In addition to major living history presentations, each character will make special public appearances and present scheduled behind-the-scenes programs for children and adults throughout the host community.

Marion will host five humanities scholars-in-residence for five days as part of Ohio Chautauqua 2004.

For the under-the tent shows, appropriately costumed scholars will portray these historic characters: Henry Ford, automotive pioneer; Zelda Fitzgerald, author and wife of famed author F. Scott Fitzgerald; H.L. Mencken, publisher; Zora Neale Hurston, African-American writer; and Harry Houdini, magician.
