Calendar, 2/2/12
February 1, 2012

El Bulli, part of the Wexner Center’s Field and Screen monthlong series focused on food, is a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the Spanish restaurant in Catalonia many have hailed as the world’s most influential eatery for its inventive rethinking of fine dining. (El Bulli closed in the summer of 2011.) Employing a direct, cinema verité style, the filmmakers follow chef Ferran Adrià and his staff through the six months it took to design and create the menu for the 2008-09 season. Showtime is 7 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Film/Video Theater. Visit wexarts.org or call 292-3535 for more information.

Calendar, 1/19/12
January 18, 2012

Chico & Rita combines the passionate music and culture of Cuba with an epic story of love and heartbreak set against the color and bustle of the late 1940s and early 1950s. Chico is a young piano player with big dreams; Rita is a beautiful singer with a powerful voice. United by music and romantic desire, they travel across the globe, but their journey — in the tradition of the Latin ballad, the bolero — brings heartache and torment. Co-directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Fernando Trueba (Belle Epoque) and renowned designer and illustrator Javier Mariscal, Chico & Rita features an original soundtrack by the multi-Grammy winning Cuban legend Bebo Valdés, as well as music by Thelonius Monk, Cole Porter, Dizzy Gillespie and others. Showtime is 7 p.m. Jan. 28 in the Wexner Center for the Arts’ Film/Video Theater. For more information, visit wexarts.org or call 292-3535.

Calendar, 1/5/12
January 4, 2012

One of the leading playwrights and directors to emerge from Argentina’s vibrant theater scene, Mariano Pensotti brings El pasado es un animal grotesco (The past is a grotesque animal) to the Wex. This play tells the stories of four characters in their twenties in Buenos Aires who leave behind youth’s illusions from 1999 to 2009, a time of social and economic upheaval in Argentina. The actors perform on a stage that rotates like a turntable through four sections divided by walls so that each scene recalls a snapshot. It’s a cinematic look at a generation coping with universal struggles in this specific place and time. Performed in Spanish with English surtitles. Intended for mature audiences. Showtimes are 8 p.m. Jan. 19-21 and 2 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Black Box on Mershon Stage. Tickets are $18 general public, $15 members, $10 students and can be purchased at tickets.wexarts.org. Call 292-3535 for more information.

A new documentary, The Interrupters, which chronicles the true stories of three former gang members working to protect their Chicago communities from violence, will be shown in the Wexner Center’s Mershon Auditorium at 7 p.m. Nov. 9 followed by a panel discussion. Working with the organization CeaseFire, Chicago’s “violence interrupters” — who have credibility on the street because of their own personal histories — strive to intervene before incidents explode into violence. In the film, the work and insights of the three violence interrupters are informed by their own unusual journeys. The panel discussion will be moderated by Jerry Saunders, CEO of the Africentric Personal Development Shop in Columbus. Panelists are Eddie Bocanegra and Ameena Matthews (pictured at right), violence interrupters from Chicago who are featured in the movie; Zak Piper, co-producer of The Interrupters; and Deanna Wilkinson, an associate professor at Ohio State, director of CeaseFire Columbus, and founder of the Ohio State Youth Violence Prevention Advisory Board, which is cosponsoring the event. Applications open for CAPS Synergy Workshop
Dec. 1-3
The Center for Applied Plant Sciences is now accepting applications for the First CAPS Synergy Workshop at the Blackwell. CAPS was recently launched by the colleges of Arts and Sciences and Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Its mission is to find practical solutions to challenging problems within four main strategic areas: Photosynthesis and Carbon Fixation, Biomass and Bioproducts, Crop Improvement and Functional Foods and Plant-Microbe Interactions.
A unique characteristic of CAPS is that initial membership will be by interdisciplinary scientific teams, rather than individuals. Teams will be expected to create synergy in a continuum between basic and applied research. All faculty are invited to apply for participation in the workshop at plantsynergy.ning.com.
For more information, contact Erich Grotewold, director (grotewold.1@osu.edu) or Donnalyn Roxey, program manager (roxey.3@osu.edu).

Dinner and a movie at OSU Lima
Aug. 25, Sept. 22
For more than 15 years, chef and film buff Brian Keegan has presented more than 75 award-winning foreign films coupled with authentic dinners that match the country of origin of those films. The dinners will be served in the Reed Hall Cafeteria adjacent to the Martha W. Farmer Theatre for the Performing Arts, where the films will be shown. In keeping with project tradition, the films selected for the 2011 summer series have both had successful showings at international film festivals:
Aug. 25 — “Happy-Go-Lucky” (United Kingdom, 2008) follows the exploits of Poppy, a relentlessly cheerful schoolteacher who is much more than the free spirit she seems at first. Starring Sally Hawkins and nominated for 45 international festival awards (including the Oscars and Golden Globes) that yielded 15 wins.
Sept. 22 — “Italian for Beginners” (Denmark, 2000) is a charming and warm romantic comedy/drama about seven people using beginning Italian lessons as a means of meeting romantic prospects. Nominated for 43 international awards, winning 20.
