Calendar, 11/03/11

A new documentary, The Interrupters, which chronicles the true stories of three former gang members working to protect their Chicago communities from violence, will be shown in the Wexner Center’s Mershon Auditorium at 7 p.m. Nov. 9 followed by a panel discussion. Working with the organization CeaseFire, Chicago’s “violence interrupters” — who have credibility on the street because of their own personal histories — strive to intervene before incidents explode into violence. In the film, the work and insights of the three violence interrupters are informed by their own unusual journeys. The panel discussion will be moderated by Jerry Saunders, CEO of the Africentric Personal Development Shop in Columbus. Panelists are Eddie Bocanegra and Ameena Matthews (pictured at right), violence interrupters from Chicago who are featured in the movie; Zak Piper, co-producer of The Interrupters; and Deanna Wilkinson, an associate professor at Ohio State, director of CeaseFire Columbus, and founder of the Ohio State Youth Violence Prevention Advisory Board, which is cosponsoring the event. For more information or tickets, visit wexarts.org or call 292-3535.

Applications open for CAPS Synergy Workshop
Dec. 1-3

The Center for Applied Plant Sciences is now accepting applications for the First CAPS Synergy Workshop at the Blackwell. CAPS was recently launched by the colleges of Arts and Sciences and Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Its mission is to find practical solutions to challenging problems within four main strategic areas: Photosynthesis and Carbon Fixation, Biomass and Bioproducts, Crop Improvement and Functional Foods and Plant-Microbe Interactions.

A unique characteristic of CAPS is that initial membership will be by interdisciplinary scientific teams, rather than individuals. Teams will be expected to create synergy in a continuum between basic and applied research. All faculty are invited to apply for participation in the workshop at plantsynergy.ning.com.

For more information, contact Erich Grotewold, director (grotewold.1@osu.edu) or Donnalyn Roxey, program manager (roxey.3@osu.edu).

Starring Sally Hawkins and nominated for 45 international festival awards (including the Oscars and Golden Globes) that yielded 15 wins.

Ohio State University will once again be participating in the American Heart Association’s annual Heart Walk, which will take place at 9 a.m. at Huntington Park. As a member of the OSU community, you know every effort we make can be effective in the lives of others. Captains have the great opportunity to get others involved, to fundraise with a team and to raise awareness in their communities.

Last year OSU received more than $1 million from the American Heart Association for valuable research. For every $1 raised at the Heart Walk, more than $2 comes back into our community in the form of research dollars. Participants of all ages join in a non-competitive 1- or 3-mile walk. OSU’s 2011 goal is to raise $100,000 for lifesaving research and educational programs.

All walkers will receive a free team Ohio State T-shirt and be entered to win various prizes. To become a captain or create a team, visit centralohioheartwalk.kintera.org, click “Find a Company” and select “The Ohio State University Medical Center.”

Calendar, 6/16/11

June 15, 2011

As our film heritage becomes more and more digitized, it is harder and harder for audiences to see important films in the manner in which they were originally meant to be presented: In a theater, on film, with an audience. Film History 101 is the Wexner Center’s modest attempt to keep this tradition alive while also celebrating Japanese cinema. To start it off is Yasujiro Ozu’s Tokyo Story, which is regularly cited as one of the greatest films ever made. This quiet film tells a devastating story of an aging couple’s trip to Tokyo to visit their children, only to be neglected by their self-absorbed offspring. One of the most poignant films about growing old, the story is inspired in part by Leo McCarey’s Make Way for Tomorrow (1937). Tokyo Story shows at 7 p.m. June 21.
