Headline newsPROVOST TO ADDRESS STATE OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRSExecutive Vice President and Provost Barbara Snyder will deliver the annual State of Academic Affairs address at 3:30 p.m. Thursday (1/11) in 130 Drinko Hall. The address will stress collaboration and teamwork, and will focus on the year's academic priorities, which include the restructuring of the undergraduate curriculum, the reform of graduate education, and ensuring that Ohio State is economically accessible to every qualified student. Faculty, students and staff are invited to attend. ADVERTISEMENT YOLANDA KING TO SPEAK AT MLK CELEBRATIONYolanda King, the first-born daughter of civil rights legend Martin Luther King Jr., is the keynote speaker for the 2007 King Celebration at 7 p.m. Thursday (1/11) in Hitchcock Hall Auditorium. The university’s 35th anniversary celebrating the life and legacy of the senior King will also feature the African American Voices Gospel Choir. The event is free and open to the public, and will launch a weekend of activities leading up to the national observance on Monday (1/15). Read More > ADVERTISEMENT UNIVERSITY POLICE UNLEASH PUBLIC RELATIONS PUSHUniversity police are working hard to promote a friendlier, more interactive type of policing. Activities such as a recent student safety presentation starring an officer and his 70-pound German shepherd partner allow officers to interact with the campus community. The division also offers self-defense classes such as Rape Aggression Defense for Women, a free program for staff and faculty that covers risk reduction and teaches the basics of hands-on defense training. Read More > FORUM, VIRTUAL SURGERY DEMONSTRATION TODAYMary McLoughlin, associate professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine, and Don Stredney, senior scientist with the Ohio Supercomputer Center, will discuss their recently funded project, “Employing Simulation Technologies for Veterinary Surgical Training to Reduce Animal Use: Accelerating Adoption,” sponsored by the Alternatives in Research and Development Foundation from 5:30-7:30 p.m. today (1/10) in the Wexner Auditorium of the Veterinary Medicine Academic Building. A demonstration of virtual surgical techniques will be offered before and after the discussion. Sessions will take place from 12:30-1:18 p.m. on Fridays, from Friday (1/12)-Friday (3/2) in M-008 Starling-Loving Hall. INTRODUCE A GIRL TO ENGINEERING DAY FEB. 24The College of Engineering is hosting “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday (2/24) at Hitchcock Hall. The half-day event, offered by Ohio State’s Women in Engineering program and sponsored by Battelle, is open to female students who are currently attending third-sixth grade. One parent and/or guardian is welcome to accompany each participant. The program is free and registration is required. Applications will be accepted until Friday (2/2) or until full. VETERINARY COLLEGE HOSTS PUPPY CLASSESThe OSU College of Veterinary Medicine is offering puppy socialization classes for puppies age eight-16 weeks and their owners. Puppy Kindergarten serves to socialize new puppies so that they may learn to handle stress and new situations well as an adult and provides owner education in all aspects of canine development and behavior problem prevention and resolution. Weekly classes begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday (1/24). OSU employees and students receive a $10 discount on the six-week course (regularly $95). Registration and fees are due by noon Monday (1/22). Class size is limited. Registration forms are available online.
