PROVOST TO ADDRESS STATE OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Executive Vice President and Provost Barbara Snyder will deliver the annual State of Academic Affairs address at 3:30 p.m. Thursday (1/11) in 130 Drinko Hall. The address will stress collaboration and teamwork, and will focus on the year's academic priorities, which include the restructuring of the undergraduate curriculum, the reform of graduate education, and ensuring that Ohio State is economically accessible to every qualified student. Faculty, students and staff are invited to attend.

YOLANDA KING TO SPEAK AT MLK CELEBRATION

Yolanda King, the first-born daughter of civil rights legend Martin Luther King Jr., is the keynote speaker for the 2007 King Celebration at 7 p.m. Thursday (1/11) in Hitchcock Hall Auditorium. The university’s 35th anniversary celebrating the life and legacy of the senior King will also feature the African American Voices Gospel Choir. UNIVERSITY POLICE UNLEASH PUBLIC RELATIONS PUSH

University police are working hard to promote a friendlier, more interactive type of policing. Activities such as a recent student safety presentation starring an officer and his 70-pound German shepherd partner allow officers to interact with the campus community. The division also offers self-defense classes such as Rape Aggression Defense for Women, a free program for staff and faculty that covers risk reduction and teaches the basics of hands-on defense training. FORUM, VIRTUAL SURGERY DEMONSTRATION TODAY

Mary McLoughlin, associate professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine, and Don Stredney, senior scientist with the Ohio Supercomputer Center, will discuss their recently funded project, “Employing Simulation Technologies for Veterinary Surgical Training to Reduce Animal Use: Accelerating Adoption,” sponsored by the Alternatives in Research and Development Foundation from 5:30-7:30 p.m. today (1/10) in the Wexner Auditorium of the Veterinary Medicine Academic Building. ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURE AND HEALTH DATA SEMINAR SERIES

The Program in Spatial Statistics and Environmental Sciences in the Department of Statistics and the Division of Environmental Health Sciences and Epidemiology in the School of Public Health are jointly organizing a weekly seminar series on Environmental Exposure and Health Data during Winter Quarter. Sessions will take place from 12:30-1:18 p.m. on Fridays, from Friday (1/12)-Friday (3/2) in M-008 Starling-Loving Hall. CENTER FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP HOSTS BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION

The Center for Entrepreneurship at the Fisher College of Business is hosting the 2007 Fisher Business Plan Competition. Earn more than $130,000 in cash and services to use as start up funds to transform your idea into a thriving business. INTRODUCE A GIRL TO ENGINEERING DAY FEB. 24

The College of Engineering is hosting “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday (2/24) at Hitchcock Hall. The half-day event, offered by Ohio State’s Women in Engineering program and sponsored by Battelle, is open to female students who are currently attending third-sixth grade. One parent and/or guardian is welcome to accompany each participant. The program is free and registration is required. Applications will be accepted until Friday (2/2) or until full. VETERINARY COLLEGE HOSTS PUPPY CLASSES

The OSU College of Veterinary Medicine is offering puppy socialization classes for puppies age eight-16 weeks and their owners. Puppy Kindergarten serves to socialize new puppies so that they may learn to handle stress and new situations well as an adult and provides owner education in all aspects of canine development and behavior problem prevention and resolution. Weekly classes begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday (1/24). OSU employees and students receive a $10 discount on the six-week course (regularly $95). Registration and fees are due by noon Monday (1/22). Class size is limited. Registration forms are available online.
