Headline newsLSU, OSU BATTLE ON FOOTBALL FIELD, COLLABORATE IN RESEARCH FIELDLSU and Ohio State will battle for the BCS National College Football Championship in the Superdome later today (1/7), but if the game was held in the Louisiana wetlands instead, the entire field would disappear before halftime. Louisiana’s wetlands are being lost at the rate of approximately one football field every 38 minutes. To fight against this rapid destruction, the two universities joined forces in 2003, forming an ongoing research partnership with the goal of rebuilding the vanishing coastal wetland ecosystem that makes up 30 percent of the nation’s total coastal marsh. GREEN 4-H CENTER OPENS ON OHIO STATE CAMPUSFaculty, staff and student workers began moving into the new Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau Ohio 4-H Center, at 2201 Fred Taylor Drive across from the Schottenstein Center, on Wednesday (1/2). The first stand-alone 4-H center on a university campus, the facility was built to the specifications of the national Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program and is the first “green” building on the OSU campus. The building's green features include a geothermal heating and cooling system, reflective roof, recycled materials and a building and window design that will rely heavily on natural light. Officials estimate that the 4-H center will save 30 percent on heating and cooling costs. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony and building dedication is set for 3-5 p.m. Friday (4/4). PARKING BAN IN EFFECT FOR TODAY’S OSU-LSU CHAMPIONSHIP GAMEA parking ban will be in effect for the OSU vs. LSU Championship football game scheduled for today (1/7). The parking ban will aid in preventing property damage to vehicles that would have been parked along key streets. The parking ban will be in effect from 4 p.m. today (1/7) until 4 a.m. Tuesday (1/8). The ban will be in effect for the following streets:
O-H-I-O ON TV DURING BCS GAME TONIGHTHave you submitted a photo to the university's O-H-I-O site (www.osu.edu/O-H-I-O/)? If so, your photo may be televised during the BCS National Championship game. A new 30-second TV spot will air during the title game today (1/7) and subsequent basketball games. The spot features photos from the site, as well as the voices of students, alumni, faculty and staff. Watch the spot online SCIENCE CAFÉ EXPLORES THE INFECTIOUS DISEASE MRSAKurt Stevenson from the Division of Infectious Diseases at the OSU Medical Center will present information and answer questions about Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) at the next Science Café, hosted by Ohio State Marion at 7 p.m. Tuesday (1/8) at Rise & Dine Restaurant, Legacy Crossing, 142 McMahan Blvd. The public is invited to the free event. MRSA is a bacterium that is resistant to many antibiotics. Cases of MRSA have been hot topic news items recently as they have been reported in the Marion area and throughout central Ohio. Science and Religion is the topic of the next Science Café on Tuesday (2/5). An opening reception and artists’ introductions will take place from 5-7 p.m. today (1/7) in Hopkins Hall. The exhibition features works by first-year graduate students in the art and technology, ceramics, glass, painting and drawing, photography, printmaking and sculpture programs. Contact: 292-5072 WOSU CHANGES ENHANCE CLASSICAL MUSIC, EXPAND NPR AND NEWS COVERAGETo enhance WOSU Public Media’s local classical music programming while providing more news, on Monday (1/14) WOSU will begin showcasing local classical music hosts at mid-day and add more local news coverage from the award-winning WOSU news team and national news from National Public Radio (NPR) on WOSU 89.7 FM. The new weekday programming schedule on WOSU 89.7 FM will simulcast select programs being broadcast on WOSU 820 AM including Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Marketplace. WOSU 89.7 FM will also incorporate news and entertainment programming into the weekend schedule. WOSU will continue to offer a 24-hour local/national classical music service on www.wosu.org and on all classical WOSU 89-7 HD2. Free for faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, the workshop provides training in the nine core areas of instruction as mandated by NIH guidelines for Responsible Conduct of Research. Topics include data acquisition and management, mentor/trainee responsibilities, responsible authorship, research misconduct, and more. The reading is free and open to the public. Warren is the author of many publications, including “Stained Glass” (1993), for which she was awarded the Lamont Prize from the Academy of American Poets.
