Headline newsDICK GREGORY IS KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOR KING CELEBRATIONHuman rights activist and comedian Dick Gregory will join the Ohio State community in celebrating the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. at 7 p.m. Thursday (1/10) at Hitchcock Hall. Gregory will deliver the keynote address for the 36th annual celebration that will also feature the Ohio State African American Voices Gospel Choir. The event is free and open to the public. The event is one of several that will culminate on the official day of remembrance on Monday (1/21).

JOURNALISTS FROM MAJOR NEWSROOMS ARRIVE AT OSU TO STUDY DIGITAL MEDIAMidcareer journalists from around the country arrived this week at Ohio State’s John Glenn School of Public Affairs, where they will be studying digital media as part of their fellowships in the Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism. Two of the five journalists are being funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which recently awarded the Kiplinger Program a $177,300 grant to fund fellowships and provide digital media training and equipment. All of the fellows are award-winning journalists who hail from a wide variety of newsrooms, ranging from washingtonpost.com to The Los Angeles Times. MERSHON CENTER EXTENDS DEADLINE FOR GRANT APPLICATIONSEach year, the Mershon Center for International Security Studies holds a competition for Ohio State faculty and students to apply for research grant funds that may be used for a variety of research purposes, including travel, seminars, conferences, interviews, experiments, workshops and more. Applications must be for projects that relate to one or more of the Mershon Center’s three areas of focus. Because the center has not received enough applications from faculty and students, the usual deadline in early January has been extended to Monday (1/28). DESIGNING QUIZZES, ASSIGNMENTS AND TESTS WORKSHOP TODAYFaculty and TA development is presenting a workshop, “Designing Quizzes, Assignments, and Tests,” from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. today (1/9) in 150 Younkin Success Center. If you anticipate designing your own assignments and exams, this session will assist you in creating learning objectives and designing quizzes, assignments and exams that test for the skills you desire. HIV/AIDS IN MALAWI KICKS OFF CAS BROWN BAG SERIESAs the first of seven brown bag talks organized by the Center for African Studies, Jesse Kwiek will speak on HIV/AIDS in Malawi at noon Friday (1/11) in 122 Oxley Hall. Kwiek is an assistant professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and the Department of Microbiology in OSU's College of Medicine. Much of his research focuses on mother to child transmission of the AIDS virus, particularly in the context of the developing world. Contact: Laura Joseph, 292-8169 or cas@osu.edu UNIVERSITY PHOTO ARCHIVES LAUNCHES ONLINE GALLERIESThe University Photo Archives has launched six online image galleries containing a sampling of the nearly 2 million images held at the Archives. The photo galleries contain a total of 120 photographs, ranging from 1875 to 2005. Images include several university historic firsts, including the first OSU graduating class (1878), the first football team (1890), and the first Brutus Buckeye (1965). LIBRARIES READALOUD PROGRAM CONTINUES THURSDAYThe Libraries' weekly ReadAloud program resumes Thursday (1/10) from 3-4 p.m. in the Wexner Center Cafe. ReadAloud is made possible through the efforts of the student assistants from University Libraries Security who provide set up for each week's event.
