Headline newsOHIO STATE RESEARCH OF ANIMAL TUMORS MAY BENEFIT HUMANSResearchers at Ohio State’s Comprehensive Cancer Center are collecting canine tumors for a national tissue bank that will shed new information on the prevention, detection and treatment of cancers in humans as well as animals. The university’s College of Veterinary Medicine is one of three schools nationwide chosen to work with the National Cancer Institute’s Comparative Oncology Program to establish the tissue bank. Tumors from dogs are collected for the Pfizer-Canine Comparative Oncology Genomics Consortium, says Laura Rush, co-leader of the tissue bank and a member of Molecular Biology and Cancer Genetics at the Comprehensive Cancer Center. MBI PUBLIC LECTURE: WHY DO WE WALK THE WAY WE DO?The Mathematical Biosciences Institute is holding a lecture that is free and open to the public at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (1/15) in 355 Jennings Hall (MBI Auditorium). Contact: jennifer.lanter@osumc.edu or 293-2115 OSU EXTENSION OFFERS FACT SHEETS ON ESTATE PLANNINGOSU Extension has developed a series of fact sheets to aid individuals in understanding the basic concepts of estate planning and the process of developing an estate plan. Topics include: costs involved in transferring estates, tax basis for transferred property, wills, life insurance, trusts, giving, sale of residence, nursing home dilemma, Medicare and Medigap, and generation-skipping trusts. The fact sheets can be downloaded for free from OSU Extension’s Ohioline Web site. REGISTER FOR RESPONSIBLE CONDUCT OF RESEARCH WORKSHOPA workshop on the Responsible Conduct of Research is scheduled for Wednesday (1/23) at The Blackwell. Free for faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, the workshop provides training in the nine core areas of instruction as mandated by NIH guidelines for Responsible Conduct of Research. Topics include data acquisition and management, mentor/trainee responsibilities, responsible authorship, research misconduct, and more. Contact: prestage.2@osu.edu UNIVERSITY PHOTO ARCHIVES LAUNCHES ONLINE GALLERIESThe University Photo Archives has launched six online image galleries containing a sampling of the nearly 2 million images held at the Archives. The photo galleries contain a total of 120 photographs, ranging from 1875 to 2005. Images include several university historic firsts, including the first OSU graduating class (1878), the first football team (1890), and the first Brutus Buckeye (1965). They will be presented at the Celebration of Excellence in Community Service and Scholarship reception on Thursday (5/15). Students nominate themselves. Anyone may nominate in the other categories. The deadline is Friday (3/14). The awards are sponsored by the Service-Learning Initiative, Service-Learning Scholars Roundtable, and Project Community/Ohio Union. DISCUSS COCA COLA'S CONTRACT WITH OSU JAN. 16Students Against Coke is sponsoring “Coca Cola and You: Coca Cola's Contract with OSU” at 7 p.m. Wednesday (1/16) in 150 Scott Laboratory. Ray Rogers from Killercoke.org will speak to the student body about the contract Coca-Cola has with Ohio State, will show videos and open the program up to any questions students, faculty or staff may have.
