Headline newsOSU RESEARCH STORY AMONG 10 MOST POPULAR SCIENCE STORIES OF 2007An article written by Earle Holland, assistant vice president for Research Communications at Ohio State, was included as one of the “10 most popular" science stories of 2007, according to the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The article, “Antarctic Temperatures Disagree with Climate Model Predictions,” was the third most popular story, according to Eurekalert!, the electronic distribution system for science news run by the AAAS. There were 15,697 science stories carried by Eurekalert in 2007. The 10 Most Popular Stories in 2007 were identified by monitoring Web site traffic and isolating the news releases that received the highest total number of visits between January and December of 2007. The OSU story received 129,812 hits.
SEARCH COMMITTEE FOR FISHER COLLEGE DEAN FORMEDOhio State Executive Vice President and Provost Joseph Alutto has appointed a 17-member search committee to conduct the search for the next Fisher College dean. The group of faculty members, administrators, business leaders and one student will be charged with finding a successor to Alutto, who served as the dean of Fisher from 1991 to 2007 before becoming OSU’s chief academic officer. The search committee will be chaired by Wiley W. Souba Jr., interim senior vice president and executive dean for Health Sciences and CEO of the Medical Center.

RESEARCH IN BOTANY HERBARIUM LECTURE SERIES BEGINS JAN. 16A new Herbarium lecture series, “Research in Botany” will kick off at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (1/16) in the OSU Museum of Biological Diversity Auditorium. Maria Pruchnicki, and Jennifer Rodis of the College of Pharmacy will present “Comparison of Computer-Based vs. Paper-Based Examinations for Pharmacy Students in a Drug Information Course” from 3:30-5 p.m. today (1/15) in 300 Younkin Success Center. Pruchnicki and her colleagues have studied the impact of the mode of delivery of examinations in their class and will discuss both their scholarly approach to the project and the findings in their study. A separate session, “Grading” will take place from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday (1/16) in 150 Younkin. Discuss grading techniques that provide appropriate and clear feedback to students and maintain fairness. Register online. DEBATE FEB. 12The Intercollegiate Studies Institute and the John Glenn School of Public Affairs are co-sponsoring a public debate, "Are Unions Destroying American Education?" at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (2/12) in the Faculty Club Grand Lounge. Peter Brimelow, a British American financial journalist, author, and founder of VDARE.com, an anti-illegal alien Web site and Richard Kahlenberg, a senior fellow at the Century Foundation, where he writes about education, equal opportunity, and civil rights, will explore this topic. The debate is free and open to the public, but seating is limited and reservations are required by Friday (2/8). Register online.
