RE: TEST OF THE EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION SYSTEMThe university conducted a test of the Buckeye Alert System starting at noon Wednesday (1/16). In the event of a real emergency situation at Ohio State, you would be instructed to tune into WOSU AM and other local media outlets, and watch for additional details that would be posted on the Ohio State Web site and sent directly to you via OSU Today. To have your number included on the university’s text message alert system, register on the Buckeye Alert System.
HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE IN OLDER ADULTS TRACED TO GENE'S EFFECTS IN BLOOD VESSELSScientists have identified the gene that sets off a sequence of events in the blood vessels of otherwise healthy adults that can lead to high blood pressure. The disease process eventually makes conditions in vessels ripe for the creation of blockages that can cause heart attacks, strokes and circulatory problems. The finding in a study led by Ohio State researchers might lead to new therapeutic options for high blood pressure, especially hypertension associated with aging. Obesity and aging contribute to increasing cases of high blood pressure, which currently affects an estimated 50 million Americans. The session will be held from 10-11 a.m. via the participant's telephone in his/her chosen locatio n. Lisa Borelli, University Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, will explain what SAD is, who gets SAD, and some causes of SAD. Contact: 292-2800 AVORGBEDOR IS JAN. 18 CENTER FOR AFRICAN STUDIES LECTURE SERIES GUESTDaniel Avorgbedor, associate professor in the School of Music and in the Department of African American and African Studies, is the guest lecturer for the next Center for African Studies brown bag lecture series, scheduled for noon-1 p.m. Friday (1/18) in 122 Oxley Hall. Avorgbedor will deliver “Autochthonous Research and Biographical Evidence: Knowledge Construction, Interdisciplinarity, and Ethnomusicological Research in Africa with Focus on Religious-Ritual Traditions.” He is currently coordinator of the Ethnomusicology program at OSU, and is co-director of the Lusoglobe Working Group of the Institute for Collaborative Research and Public Humanities.
