FACULTY/STAFF INVITED TO COLUMBUS 2012 BICENTENNIAL CITIZEN SUMMIT

The year 2012 will mark the 200th anniversary of the City of Columbus. Ohio State faculty and staff are invited to participate in the 2012 Bicentennial Citizen Summit, scheduled for Tuesday (1/29) at the Columbus Convention Center Terrace Ballroom. Your opinions will help the 2012 Bicentennial Commission, co-chaired by President E. Gordon Gee, to develop projects, programs and priorities to enhance the quality of life throughout Columbus. James Surowiecki, author of the national bestseller, “The Wisdom of Crowds” is the featured speaker. Registration is from 5-6 p.m. and the program runs from 6-8:30 p.m. The event is free, but reservations are required. Register at www.columbus2012.org or call 424-6204.

EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION SYSTEM UPDATE

The university conducted a test of the Buckeye Alert System at noon Wednesday (1/16), and sent text or voice messages to almost 14,000 registered cell phone numbers, and almost as many campus telephones. Faculty, students and staff are reminded that in the event of a real emergency situation, you also would be instructed to tune into WOSU 820 AM, Ohio State’s official source of news and information about an emergency affecting the university community. In a real emergency, additional details also would be posted on the Ohio State Web site (www.osu.edu) and sent from Public Safety via e-mail. Register online to have your number included on the university’s text message alert system.

USAC MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED

The University Staff Advisory Committee is currently accepting membership applications for the 2008-2011 terms. USAC maintains an active and participatory line of communication with the university community and provides a forum through which staff can raise, discuss and make recommendations on nonacademic issues and activities. Applications are due Friday (2/15). Visit the USAC Web site at usac.osu.edu, and complete the online application.

SCHOOL OF MUSIC PRESENTS PREMIERE OF SYMPATICO JAN. 22

The School of Music is presenting the premiere performance of the Sympatico Percussion Group at 8 p.m. Tuesday (1/22) in Weigel Auditorium. Joseph Krygier and Susan Powell, OSU percussion faculty, are members of the group. Sympatico will perform a variety of percussion ensemble pieces including The Invisible Proverb by Russell Hartenberger, an African-based mallet ensemble piece, and Ogoun Badagris by Chrisopher Rouse, a bombastic drumming piece influenced by Voodoo drum rituals. Tickets are $12 (general admission), $6 (senior citizens and students with ID), and free for School of Music faculty, staff and students with ID. RESEARCH ADMINISTRATION TRAINING OPPORTUNITY

The Office of Research is offering a training opportunity from the National Council of University Research Administrators. The four-hour video workshop, “Managing Cost Issues” will be broadcast live via satellite to the Research Foundation at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday (1/22). Details and registration are available online. CRIME ALERT CLARIFICATION

It was recently reported that a robbery had occurred in the parking garage of South Campus Gateway on Wednesday (1/16). In fact, the robbery had occurred east of the Gateway property in the alley that runs between and parallel to Chittenden and East 11th avenues. The victim went to the Gateway security office located in the Gateway garage to report that he had just been assaulted and robbed in the nearby neighborhood. The security office assisted the victim and alerted the Columbus Division of Police. Anyone with information concerning this crime should contact either the Columbus Police, 645-4545 or University Police 292-2121. You may also report information anonymously to the Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 645-TIPS or the University Crime Stoppers Tips line at 247-TIPS.

PREPARING FUTURE FACULTY INFORMATION SESSIONS

The Graduate School is requesting faculty and staff to encourage graduate students who are completing their Ph.D., MFA or equivalent degree and are interested in exploring options for careers as faculty members to attend one of two information sessions to learn more about the Preparing Future Faculty Program. Ohio State graduate students can learn about careers at smaller colleges or universities through an arranged mentorship with a faculty member at one of Ohio’s leading liberal arts colleges. The meetings will be held in 226 University Hall, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Friday (1/25) or 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday (2/4). Registration is not required but is appreciated. Register online. MEHTA TO DISCUSS CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE IN WOMEN JAN. 31

Laxmi S. Mehta will discuss "Cardiovascular Disease in Women" at 4 p.m. Thursday (1/31) in 264 Newton Hall. The discussion will cover the statistics regarding women and heart disease, the symptoms of heart disease in women and how they differ from those in men, the risk factors for heart disease, and how to modify one’s risk. In addition, a voluntary risk assessment form will be supplied to determine if you are at risk for cardiovascular disease. Anyone who is interested in women’s cardiovascular health, preparing to become a healthcare professional or currently working in the healthcare setting is welcome to attend. PROTECTED HEALTH INFORMATION BY OSUMC STAFF POLICY REVISED

Use of Protected Health Information by OSUMC staff policy has been revised, based on extensive involvement with the OSUMC Research Privacy Committee, and is now in effect. The policy lists approved uses of PHI, for treatment, payment, operations, and research purposes. The associated procedures for use of PHI for research are extensive. The procedure includes: sources of PHI for research, preparatory to research activities, use of patient information in subject recruitment, IRB exempt research, and de-identified patient information, as well as other aspects of research activities. STREET LIGHTING PROJECT ENTERS FINAL PHASE

The final phase of the street lighting improvements project for the OSU Off-Campus Core Area will begin on Tuesday (1/22) and will involve replacing the existing street lighting facilities on Woodruff Ave (from Waldeck Ave. to High St.). Please comply with temporary parking restrictions. Vehicles not adhering to the restrictions will be ticketed by the City of Columbus Police Department and towed at the owner’s expense to the Columbus Impound Lot at 400 W. Whittier Street. WINTER 2008 DISSERTATION WRITING GROUPS NOW FORMING

Would you like your advisees to get more feedback on their dissertations? Writing Center dissertation groups are open to Ph.D. candidates in any discipline. Groups have three to four writers and meet one hour per week at a convenient time. These collaborative and collegial meetings are a great way to stay motivated, explore interdisciplinary connections, and receive individualized feedback on your work from colleagues and a WC Consultant.
