Headline newsIN SEARCH FOR WATER ON MARS, CLUES FROM ANTARCTICAScientists have gathered more evidence that suggests flowing water on Mars - by comparing images of the red planet to an otherworldly landscape on Earth. In recent years, scientists have examined images of several sites on Mars where water appears to have flowed to the surface and left behind a trail of sediment. Those sites closely resemble places where water flows today in the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica, the new study has found. Researchers have used the Dry Valleys as an analogy for Mars for 30 years, explained Berry Lyons, professor of earth sciences and director of the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State. Read more >
PHISHING E-MAIL ALERTA large number of Ohio State e-mail addresses were sent a phishing scam e-mail Monday afternoon (1/21), asking for username, password, and date of birth in order to prevent the account from being removed. The message itself was addressed "Dear OSU Email Account Owner." The message is a scam, and was not sent by the Office of Information Technology or anyone else within Ohio State. Do not reply to the message. If you have already replied, go to OIT’s Account Management Web site and change your password immediately. ACHIEVING SCIENTIFIC LITERACY: WHAT’S IT GOING TO TAKE?Literacy Studies is sponsoring “Achieving Scientific Literacy” from 4-5:30 p.m. Thursday (1/31) at the George Wells Knight House, 104 E. 15th Ave. The program is organized and moderated by Susan Fisher, professor and chair of the Department of Entomology. Moritz will deliver “An Alternative Model of Crop-livestock Interactions in West Africa.” He will argue that mixed-farming systems and intensive pastoral systems are fundamentally different, even though they both involve the integration and intensification of livestock production in agricultural systems. The workshop will focus on using the Message Passing Interface standard to write parallel programs on OSC's systems. Using MPI and multiple processors allow the researcher to reduce the execution time of their programs and/or increase the sample space of the problem under study.
